basically on my cupra 180, whenever it goes to down quarter of a tank, it starts to hesitate now and again where the revs will die, and wants to cut out for a couple of seconds then be fine for another 5/10 miles, then do it again etc. its a strange problem anyone care to shed some light?

does the guage actually get to empty if you carry on for another 70-100 miles or so?
if you fill up from 1/4 on guage, how many litres do you need to put in? (55 litres is typical if filling up shortly after warning light comes on..)

yea well had it to 15 miles in the tank then i decided i didnt want to take the risk, so from when it starts doing the problem ive still got another 60 miles left in the tank, cant get my head round it tbh.

guage could either be wrong as andy is trying to get at (i think) or if you regularly top car up before 1/4 of a tank could be some old crappy petrol or derbis at bottom of tank.

my motorbike conked out a few times due to SH!T in the bottom of tank. fuel cleaner and a good blast sorted that

the thing with this 'crap at the bottom of the tank' theory, is that petrol is always taken from the bottom of the tank even when full. If anything when running low it would be crap on top of the petrol.
However, at 1/4 of a tank there is a good 3 gallons in the tank typically. so its not that low really, (assuming the guage is correct).
How old is the car?
mileage?
a fuel filter change might not be a bad idea, at around £12 and a diy'able job. (its located under the car not far in front of the offside rear wheel..
