Hi all good looking site and gona be hammering it for info, couple of questions though if you dont mind.#

Just picked up a 1997 gti 2.0 16v mk2 now the bad bits lol

First question.
I think it might have had a gearbox change as the gear know does not match the gears, is this the right order. push down to the left and up for reverse, then 12345 as usual, i need to push down and right and up for fith but think this is because of the new gear stick.

Second question wich may be a problem from the first.

The car revs out at 4500 revs, ie put foot down in third get to 4500-5000 revs and the revs drop out like its maxed, any ideas??

not arguing paid 400 for it. dont mind spending a bit of money on it, bought a fuel, air and oil filter so will do that asap, and booked in for a belt change next month as there is no history.
Anything else i should have a look at, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.
Steve.

PS card is behind the bar, order what you like. mines a nice pint of speckled hen

its in limp mode, which is why it wont go past 5k
you shouldnt need to push down to get to 5th.
400 quid is a bargain for a 2.0 16v though
welcome :D

will get some pics up tomorow, what do you mean by limp mode and vag com, and is it a easy fix???

Thanks for the warm welcome all.

vagcom is a diagnostic tool that plugs your laptop into your car to find the faults. limp mode means it wont go past 5k cos there is a big fault or the timing is out.

ahh me thinks i may have worked this out, the car goes into limp mode if it hinks something bad is gona happen, well the in02 has popped up meaning in need of major service, would this cause it to happen, if so how do i reset it till i get the service done. thanks all.

believe me ive tried everything. i eventually realised the ecu was nackered after replacing everything. ask around the forum and see if anybody near you has vagcom and could plug it in for you. it could just be a shorted wire somewhere in the engine bay.

kezz, when you put the keys in and turn ignition on, look at the mileage/trip screen and it flashes for the first few seconds. either IN0, IN01 or IN02.

IN0 means everything has been serviced..., IN01 means minor service (oil and filter), and IN02 means stop being a cheapskate and service it properly (oil and filter, fuel filter, air filter, plugs)

ok, sorted, just done a reset by following them direcections and all is good i took her for a spin up the road and dam it feels good to have all the power back, i have bought a air, oil and fuel filter, what else needs doing on a major service, will do most myself but already booked in for it to have a new timing belt,.

Thanks for all the great advice.

off topic but kezz if your getting your clutch done buy it yourself and take it to the garage to fit as they will charge double VAT on it if they supply it.

sibster if your getting timing belt done go to someone with experience with older VAG engines as they are tricky.

also worth changing pollen filter.
