High Idle Revs - Problem?

So I've recently joined the Leon club and have been happily lurking on this site since then. Hopefully someone will be able to help with my first query...

I've had the car six months and the engine has idled happily just over zero during that time, but when I started it yesterday, it jumped to nearly 10,000. There are no warning lights on the dash.

Any idea what the likely causes are for this, what is required to fix it, and how much it's likely to cost me?

The car is a 2009 FL Leon FR with just over 40k on the clock if that helps.

Cheers

No idea. Just trying to figure out what caused the initial jump and how to rectify it. Hopefully someone has seen this before.

What engine?

I've found with my 1.4 TSI when its warm the idle revs are higher. Its normally around 700rpm but on days like today its closer to 1200rpm. Perfectly normal I've been told :)

That's grand if it's totally normal. It's was the significant jump and accompanying increase in noise level that made me curious.

Let me know if anyone's experienced this and it turned out to be an underlying problem...

Cheers folks

There are a few reasons for the 170 CR engine to tick over at about 1000 revs.

here are the 3 most common.

1, the ECU has detected that the battery voltage is a bit low. This includes the fact that you may have loads of stuff switched on causing high battery load.

2, The engine temp is below 90, the outside temp is below 10 and you have the heating on.

3, the engine is attempting a regeneration of the DPF filter.

If you need more info on no3 then type regen into the search and enjoy many hours of reading.
