High Oil Consumption / car hesitates when accelerating

I drive have a 2014 Leon 1.2tsi. I know that the oil consumption in these engines can be quite high but over the past few months I’ve noticed it has got even worse. It has used as much as 500ml in 400kms and other times 500ml over 1100kms.

I have started to notice the car sometimes hesitates/ loses power for a split second when I accelerate and there is usually a puff of smoke when this happens.

Has this happened to anyone before? Or heard of anything similar?
Thanks

First how many Km has your car? For the oil consumption and smoke at acceleration after a stop or slow down with a gear is probably valve seals... but for the power loss and hesitations I don't know, maybe carbon build up? Try cleaning the throttle body with a spray cleaner, if you see a more reactive acceleration then is probably carbon build up on throttle body.. But it can also be from engine knocking, from bad injectors, spark plugs, carbon build up, low quality fuel. You can always use fuel system cleaners addons but the best thing to do is to remove the intake manifold and watch for carbon buildup and if there is, to ask your mechanic if this is the reason for the oil consumption.

These are the exact same symptoms mine has.. Same car same year with 140k on clock. Am using 1L oil every 500miles.
I'm also getting oil in cylinder 4..

So had a VAG specialist look at it and has said it could be valve stem seals...

My MOT isn't due until Feb so I have till then to decide if I get it repaired, up to £2000, or get shot of the car.....

166km on the car. Currently doing a lot of motorway driving. Using 5w30 oil, would going for something a bit thicker help in any way?

It's better to find the cause than cover it. Using thicker oil could help with the consumption but personally I prefer sticking with manufacturer recommendation.
Don't avoid to ask a mechanic to see the car. If the mechanic (group vag specialist) is good at his job, he will find the cause quickly. These symptoms can be common but the cause can differ. So if a few users in the forum solved similar symptoms with new valve seals, this do not mean that yours has the same problem.

Hi lads, me again. Changed the sparks plugs and cleaned the throttle body and the hesitation is gone. However I noticed quite a lot of oil in the pipe between the turbo and throttle body (charge pipe?). Could there be bad seals in the turbo causing the high oil consumption.

Has that engine got a chain driven cam 8V or a belt driven cam 16V?

When last did you have that charge pipe off, that oil could have been building up in there for years, my wife has a 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI 16V and I took that charge pipe to make changing the plugs a bit easier, it had oil in it that I cleaned out, and that was the first time that that pipe had been removed in 24K miles/4 years.

16v, that pipe was off about 15k kilometres ago. It seemed to be an excessive amount of oil.

Hello, I had the same problem and it was the valve stem seals, they go bad around 45kms and mainly due to bad design especially on the pre facelift models, i had them changed the oil consumption is gone.

i did them in a workshop here in egypt, the cost of the stems were around 200 usd and the installation with the fluids around 800 USd but more important is the break in period that you need to do for at least 1000kms

I used to use 5w40 Oil but after the Valve stems and piston rings , i am using 5w30 and the engine revs much easier, keep us posted with your progress.

So I finally had my valve stem seals replaced........and some....

Went into shop and had head removed and inspected... They said the valve stem seals were worn but bad enough to cause the amount of oil consumption and oil ingress into the cylinder heads as I was getting.

So I agreed for them to dig deeper... Off came the block and out came the pistons... Had the pistons and cylinder bores inspected. All good dimension wise, except the piston rings, mainly the oil scraper ring was solid with congealed oil.... No way it was letting oil back into the sump. And too boot, I had the old style ring with tiny holes....

The new style has much more open voids due to a wavey design inside the piston ring.....enabling way more oil to pass.

I popped down to garage while work was being done to see the progress... Couldn't believe the amount of solid oil build up around the pistons....so basically the oils was just being pushed past the rings into the cylinders....

Car now back together and have done 2000 Miles with no oil loss.. Now back to using 5w30 Quantum oil......
