These cars have a secondare water pump that pumps water through the turbo for aprox 30s once the engine is turned off. Better that any turbo timer.

Nobody is comparing a turbo timer to a secondary water pump. But it if your taking that stance, does the secondary water pump keep the oil flowing to prevent it being burnt by the still red hot turbine housing if you haven't got the time to leave it running? ;)

Your making it sound like if you fit a turbo timer you do away with the secondary water pump.

Not at all mate.

Its the ECU's that dont like them. Think its something to do with the ECU not wanting to run when the key is removed and wont let you lock the car ( I could be wrong though).

TT's came from the Jap market where the ECU's were very simple to fool.

If TT's where necessary do you not think the likes of VW/Audi, Vauxhall, Renault etc with modern turbocharged "hot hatches" pushing good power would incorporate them into the car?

Modern cars have so much more intelligent ECU's and ancillary systems that TT's are just not needed.

Also moderd oil is so much berrer now.

Mine locks the car fine but it used to set the alarm off sometimes this can be cured by fitting a relay i believe.

Car manufactures don't fit turbo timers because it's illegal to leave the car running with no one inside. Plus they make lots of money from suppling new turbos to people who don't know any better.;)

Maybe the oil is better these days but i'm certainly not going to rely on the sec water pump to cool the turbo after it's just taken a hammering.

I havnt got one just to help cool the turbo down. This type 1 turbo calculates 1/4 mile times, rpm, lap times etc. Its one of the most expensive ones out there.

i had thoughts of getting one not long ago

but the combination of the secondary water pump and just sitting in car for few mins made me want to put my money toward a liquid gauge instead ;)

Flip me 30sec, switch my ignition an and off and the water pumps going for 15min!

no matter how hot or cold it is 15min it satys on for,

have thought of the turbo timer, but i make time to leave the car running a few mins.

Are you being serious?! TT is 100times better than a secondary water pump! A secondary water pump will pump water/coolant after the engine is swithed of if over a certain temp. Doesnt do anything with the oil though which is the important bit and will kill your turbo. You dont get them as standard due to cost and legality issues (you can imagine the lawsuits against the manufacturers). The better oil means nada, it will still cook your bearings, and the new ecus wont do anything about your oil once your engine is off.

A TT is very useful if you drive hard and then just want to get out. You might aswell just drive abit easier for the last few miles home or sit in the car for a minute or so when you get back though. Wiring up a TT doesnt seem to be very easy on mk3 cupras for some reason and not many people have them but it very important to make sure your oil is cool enough before you turn your engine off unless you dont care about your car.

Thank you. :D

TT's are all well and good, but can you alarm your car when the engine is running ? Imagine parking in a multi story and leaving the engine running for however long then having to come back and alarm the car. Personally id rather spare a minute or two and let it tick over for a while then spending however much on a turbo timer

mine runs for a good 2 minutes, is that normal???

When you say alarm your car i'm guessing you mean lock. Fit a relay then problem solved.;)

Imho you dont need one if you are willing to drive off boost for the last few miles or sit in the car for a minute or so. I never had one and didnt need one. Turbo timers should be set up to lock and alarm your car when you leave it and I believe immob it once the engine switches off however with the transponder being in the key some people take them out and tape them to the ignition barrel which 'gets around' the immob but isnt a smart idea.

can someone describe the meaning of 'hammering' to get it that state of high temperature and needing a turbo timer........

i run a hybrid and rarely sit in my car after driving to let the oil flow through....

I'm wondering when you'd be driving like a loon, kicking hell out of your car & think 'hey' I need to stop here immediately & get away from my car.

I'm trying to think of a scenario & failing.... perhaps someone can help me out?

Oh, and how have we all managed for the last 9 yrs of Ibiza's without these devices?

Thats my thoughts exactly, Mark.

Realy no need for them.
