I have two months of finance left on my Cupra so it is that time of year where I start the ol' "ooh, what shall I do next?" thought process going (usually takes months of research/internet window shopping :)).

Started thinking about changing cars, then got a curve ball from a friend who suggested leasing which threw up a load of potential cars I wouldn't have thought about (or had the money for) and then I wondered how much a garage would charge to do a 4wd retro-fit?

I know I would need a donor S3 or TT and this is not a project I would take on personally as I do not have the room or ramp access that would be required. I also need a willing local garage which may be a possibility.

Thoughts please?

Oh man I have read about the process of changing a FWD/RWD car to 4WD and it certainly seemed extremely difficult and cost a hell lot of time and money. I wouldn't recommend it, to be honest with you, it'd honestly be easier and maybe even cheaper to trade in your car with a 4WD Audi or VW or sell it and buy one.

True, it could be cheaper to replace rather than upgrade, but I would want to buy something like an S3 or S4 and would want it to be fairly new so that is a considerable financial commitment whereas modding what I have can be done without long term deals or loans (I have some cash to use/abuse).

Yeah, it creates something a bit different and although I would never take it to the extremes (and fantastic ones they are) that MyGel has (see Readers Rides if you don't know what I mean) it would still be a great Q car and I do love the punch it has now with the Stg 2+ mods I have.

I'd probably just buy an S3?

Just looked & they're not a huge price shift between a Leon & an S3

It won't be cheap and would severely affect resale values.

I do know someone toying with the prospect of converting his Cupra, but his parts would be at trade rates and the labour would be done himself. Statller have just converted an smashed up Golf, so could give you some figures. They did have a donor car though.

I'm not sure I'd be dumping £7k in to a project with very limited resale values. How ever much fun an AWD Cupra would be, it would be dead money that you'd never recoup.

Buying a S3 or a Golf R would be a much better option IMO (that's what I did!). A few of your mods would be transferable. The others would fetch decent money to provide funds to mod the new motor.
