I have a 2016 Golf R which I bought new and got a very good deal. I was starting to look towards ordering another for next year but dropped the idea completely when I discovered that first, VW dropped the manual gearbox (ok, I could live with the DSG) but then dropped the three door. That was the final straw for me so I doubt I’ll bother with another brand new one. I’ll maybe look for a nearly new three door DSG, maybe a Clubsport S or more likely, a secondhand manual M2. VW have lost the plot in their appeal to “petrol heads” imo so I doubt I’ll ever buy a brand new VW or SEAT again - they’re just becoming fast family cars - BMW got it right with the M2 - aggressive styling, pumped up wheel arches, great engine noise and a manual box option - even Aston Martin offer a manual V12 and Jaguar offer a manual on the F Type.

I think they dropped them due to lack of demand. Although it could still be an option and a factory build, you’d just have to wait a while for it. As long as you know from the outset then all is fine.

I like my dsg and I like my 5 door but I understand what you mean. By not offering 3dr manual they will inevitably lose customers.

One possible upside - perhaps used 3 door manual prices will firm up a little!

Call me fickle but I still wouldn't have a Renault...

I'd have an i30N though, for the price I think that's really the only car I'd consider.

They been talked quite highly of. I also do like the i30n. A choice if I don’t go for a cupra.
But the megane and i30n are not on different levels. The interior wise I’d say they on par.
What I really would like to know about the i30n is how much more power can be gained from a remap rather than the safe basic figures of a 30hp gain.
Want to find out if the car has gains like the bmw since the guy who helped put it together was from BMW’s M division

Reading these posts with interest, well trying to weigh up what I'll being doing in 2 years time when my 300 goes to auction! I had a very interesting chat with the lady who handed over my car at Crewe SEAT late July and she said there and then that SEAT had to bin the 300 due to WLTP and the effects of this wouldn't stop there. It's going to have a huge impact across the board, not just performance cars in that they are already dropping different versions/variants as mentioned above. She was saying that pricing will now be realistic to each individual car and that may cause them to go up or down, more realistic MPG figures and then the dreaded VEL prices once they've sorted all that lot out. It's going to be interesting to see how these changes to car testing affect the real world, especially for those of us who like performance motors.

They didn't really bin the 300, it's just going down to 290 for those who don't have 4WD.

The only reason models are being dropped is because a lot of manufacturers will be refreshing their line ups next year or the year after. New Golf next year along with the Mk4 Leon, new 208 due next year, etc. They can't justify the costs of altering cars now to pass testing that will be retired and replaced next year.

I also cancelled my 300st order. Ordered in Jan and 6 months later no projected build date. I got sick of being messed around so cancelled and am now in the process of buying my current 280st lease. Got a date planned with unicorn in Stockport for stage 1 and dsg tunes to give the old girl some extra ponies ;)

Here's why I've decided to keep my order. Lease deal as advertised previously on the seat website. The standard deposit plus £500 cashback. £293 a month for my mileage and spec I wanted.

As time has went on I enquired about a golf R on the same terms £480 a month.

Thats why I'm waiting on the cupra lol. When I ordered Seat were subsidising the lease offer to tune of £8.5k, that's why they were so cheap. I'll just wait.

Interesting thread.

Short list for me was/is

Golf R
S3
300
135i
140i
Hyundai N

There was a possibility of buying my 280 lease but since its been accident damaged repaired (although you wouldn't know it) that flew out the window

+ the Idea of 2 years with a manufacturer warranty & no M.O.T certainly appeal.

The deal I got on the CUPRA 300 worked out at around 6k before options. My budget was 8.5k to match my 280 deal. Meaning I had a few coins left for options. Nothing else comes close - especially as now its a DSG at no extra cost.

I keep looking for deals but I'm almost certain I'll end up in this CUPRA, and this one is spec'd to keep

I have also looked around for something but can't find anything similar. I ordered the ST for the extra boot space so there isn't many other options to choose from.

I'm kinda in the same boat. Order a FR in April. Was initially told it would be ready for collection 9th July. Then I read the lead times on here and mentioned to the dealer. Since then the date I'd get the car has varied from August to March next year. I finally got a CONFIRMED build date of CW31, week ending 3rd August, with collection from dealer by end of the month. Woohoo i thought. Contacted SEAT to confirm last week and was told the car had been delayed to CW38, September 18th at the earliest due to the factory closing. Strange that, seeing as my car was "built" over a week before the factory shutdown, and the factory only shut for 2 weeks, but added 7 weeks to my order lol.

Id also like an i30N but when I looked into it before my 280 went back they were far too much on lease, more than £100 / month more than Cupra 300. Unless you're a cash buyer the i30N is very expensive, the lease. There's 2 primary reasons I've had 2 Cupra's, 3 door and cheap lease.
I suspect a lot of folk have them on lease because they are cheap, myself included but I still see hardly any of them about compared to Focus ST. With the Mk4 going down the Cupra brand route I'll be interested to see if they offer such good lease deals, if not then I'd reckon UK sales will drop, especially if they don't sort out the build times. I was lucky that i ordered my 300 in October and got it in March. Those guys waiting 3 to 6 months and not even having a build slot must be much more patient than me.

No Cupras in my area.
:seatgod:

My dealer has sold shed loads of them. I remember when the Mk1 Cupra came out no one in my area wanted one. As soon as the first one sold and word of mouth as to how good they were got out, the number sold has gone through the roof. Not so many Mk1’s seen nowadays but loads of Mk2’s and MK3’s.

I've seen so few of them I could name the places, colour and variant of them when I saw them

Not that this is Cupra top trumps but some locations have so many, main dealer in my town too.

I was considering a new Golf R as my next car but not after reading this. I differ from xyz as far as the number of doors is concerned. I need a 5 door car as my parents are now elderly.

I have no issues with those who prefer DSG but I personally would not buy one. I want a car with a manual gearbox and I definitely will not pay a premium for DSG. I realise this may well limit my choices but then again, it won't be for the first time.
