Ibiza stereo shutdown...

Ive had a quick search and seen there's a few people with the problem I have, the Stereo (in-built in dash) of my 2000 1.4s Ibiza keeps shutting down randomly. Whether its a CD or Radio it randomly switches off, could happen every 5 mins, could not happen for a day. Sometimes I wonder if its glitching up on a traffic RDS signal or something similar.

No one really seems to know the answer, maybe opening it up and re-soldering the points might cure it, otherwise need to get a new unit. So... not being even remotely electrician minded... any ideas on cost for the purchase and installation of a new head unit?

Why they didnt fit a proper stereo into the cars I'll never know.

I've put up with the problem for quite a while but I want to sell and upgrade soon and I know this is the sort of thing that will piss of a potential buyer.

So if anyone knows a solution or how much a new unit would cost that would be great. Cheers.

grundig is the answer you are looking for

and a severe shortage of warranty replacement units since 99 that resulted in faulty ones being returned and repaired for future use

Just as an update to this.... I went into the garage yesterday, getting extremely sick of this now, they said it's a common problem and a new unit is £330 plus VAT and total price to fit £475!

Think of the set up you could put in a normal car for £500! what a joke. If it is a common problem surely that's a major fault Seat should sort? Wouldn't a new stereo probably brake again in 4-5 years time?

Ive had a look around the forum at people putting in their own stereos and re-hashing the dash although most the stories and links are a couple of years old at least. Anyone had any experience recently with doing this? I really do not want to pay £475 and end up with the same shitty stereo.

cheers

And for another update....

Ive found a company that repairs them for a set fee of £47!

Now I just need to remove it....

easy

removing it is easy, underneath the bottom of the frony facia there is 2 screws, take these out, carefull lift the front facia away(dont be too rough as there is a ribbon cable attached to the unit) normally i pull it from one of the sides, not the bottom cause it gets stuck on the hazard button.

Once you have this free unclip the ribbon cable, then there is 4 screws holding the main unit in, just take them out carefully wiggle the unit out might have to pull a bit sometimes cause the cables at the back are a bit tight.

Unclip all of the stuff from the back of the unit(remeber where you took it from, take a picture for future use:)

and Hay Presto! thats it:)

I've had this radio switching on/switching off problem with my 2001 Ibiza for over a year. The situation has got more frequent and now the Tape and Band buttons operate the CD changer!!

Having a bit of an electronics background, I took both the console/fascia/screen and the back end out for a closer look but couldnt see anything obviously wrong so I called the dealer. He admitted it was a common Ibiza problem and said it could be either front or back part. He did suggest the tape idea mentioned above. Unfortunately that didnt work for me and since i had the tape/band button problem I bought a new front bit at 235 quid rather than opt for the exchange on the back at 65+vat. That didnt work either and Seat parts dept wont accept it back even after I complained to Seat customer support (who ignored my emails) about the well known prob not covered under recall, part being hardly used etc. Looks like i'll have to fork out for the exchange on the back bit and i'm still left with an expensive piece of new dashboard.

If the tape idea doesn't work, the battery can be saved by ensuring the switch on volume is always 0. This can be done by switching the radio on and turning the volume right down then switching it off (think the key needs to be turned in the ignition as if running rather than off or out altogether). This way the last volume is remembered when the radio decides to come back on at 3am - unfortunately removing the fuse loses the heating.

Incidentally, if anyone is interested in buying the front console/fasia screen part (which has 2 years warranty), do give me a shout at (replace anti spam bits with @ and .) seatradio at elitemail dot org.

Cheers,

I finally got a reply from seat....

Thank you for your e-mail dated 30/01/2007. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding.

I have been in contact with Kings SEAT Portsmouth and I have spoken with Nadine in the Service Department. She has confirmed that your vehicle requires a new radio and climate control unit.

I can confirm that whilst SEAT UK is aware of other isolated cases where radios have needed to be replaced, this is not a known concern. As the radios are sealed units, the Technicians are not able to open them as it will void the radio manufacturers warranty on the unit. The units have to be sent away to the manufacturer for inspection and they repair them or advise if the unit must be replaced. In this instance, it was recommended that the unit be replaced. As your vehicle is far out of the warranty period, I regret to advise that SEAT UK is unable to make a contribution towards the costs of repairs. Please accept my apologies that we have been unable to assist you on this occasion.

If we can be of any further assistance please feel free to contact us on our Free phone Customer Service line 0500 222222 during our office hours of 8.30am until 5.30pm Monday to Friday.

-------

So just to summarise.... they don't know if they can be repaired or not as they cannot look inside them, which would void any warranty, yet in my case they think it definitely needs replacing, although they never checked to see if it could be fixed!

Nice.

Going to take mine out at the weekend and send it up north so will let you know how that goes!
