So I’ve re done my thermostat seal. Job done. Went for drive to Tesco and back up to 90deg job done. My bottom rad hose is cold, is it meant to be? Stupid question I know but I’m still learning lol

Did you ensure there were no air bubbles. If you run the engine with the expansion bottle cap off and see if it bubbles up. If it is ok then maybe the thermostat was still closed and just about to open.

I mean it’s freezing and I didn’t spank it. Had it running with no cap on for about 10mins it didn’t go over 90. Might add Tesco is less than a mile to haha

Only other issue could be a goosed thermostat. Remember running the car will only run coolant around the engine until the thermostat opens so you could still have air in it, hopefully that's all it is mate.
Take it for a blast, keep an eye on the temp and if it starts going above 100+ it should drop if working ok. Hope that makes sense.

Will take ages but.......
NOTE keep an eye on the temp gauge at all times.
Start the car with the cap off.
Interior fan on about half way and set to point at windscreen (on hot). AC OFF!
Start it up and wait.
After 10ish minutes the air inside from the blower should start to warm up. Leave the blower on. If its still cold, rev and hold the engine at about 2k rpm for about 10seconds. If still cold then theres your air bubble. Repeat 2k rpm every minute or so. Should warm up in mo time really unkess there is another problem that needs addressing.

Once its warm inside, leave the fan on and move to the engine bay.
Stand and wait (still with the cap off).
Keep an eye on your coolant level.
Eventually all being well the stat should open and the hot water from the motor should rush into the rad and the cooler rad water back into the engine(bottom hose should be hot now). By this point, most if not all trapped air should now have made its way to the header tank. Top up if needs be and screw the cap on.

Process time

Petrol engine 20-30 minutes
Diesel engine 60+ mins

Sorry if any of this is teaching you how to suck eggs.
Just trying to help.

Well... I went for a longer drive. Heaters hot almost straight away temp went to 90 and stayed there. Parked up cap off slight steamy ness coming from inside after a few mins bottom hose had heated up. Can see coolant returning to the tank by the top hose. Give me a motorcycle I can do anything. Cars are a new subject for me lol

Got thumb ache now

I appreciate it. Like I say it’s new subjects to me. I figure most of it out myself but car cooling systems . I’m guessing from this success I am now done with the system....

.... almost.
If it were ne, id check the coolant level in the morning before start up and all is stone cold.
The level will be settled then. And should be topped up at this point if required.
Reason being, if you are back under the bonnet in a few days doing stuff. The level maybe down a little and you may start thinking youve got another leak when you havnt.
