Ignition key lost !

On holiday at in france at the moment, lost ignition key to the car. Here's what happened.

Went to the beach, detached the metal key part from the central locking pliper so it wouldnt get wet. From here i thought I passed it to my g/f but I seems I didn't and and not quite sure where it went! Now I'm left with my central locking and immobiliser fob but no key.

The car was recovered to a Seat dealer in Avranches, France. (on the back of a renault dealers truck! )

Problem now is, I was due to catch a ferry back to the UK yesterday!

I've got my V5, mot, ID etc however SEAT say it will take 15 days to get a key. My only other option is to wait 3-4days for my parents to post the spare out to me, but I'm due back in work tuesday.

However, somthing that occured to me last night, If i could get hold of a spare ignition barrell and key from a breakers here somewhere could I swap it out and have a working car so that I can get home?

Its a 97 2.0 16v, so I dont think i'd have to worry about transponders etc?

Thanks for any help, not fun being stuck in a country once your 'holiday' is supposed to be over :p

If you have the Immo transponder with you then that will start the car.

you might be able to break the steering lock, and start the car (hot wire) while holding the immo transponder very near the ignition barrel.

clearly you can't secure your car.

OR

why not ask mum & dad nicely to jump on a Portsmouth Caen ferry with the key.

Do the mk2 ibiza's/cordy's have transponders in the keys? You know how the metal key part will come away from the plipper that has the lock/unlock buttons on it? Is that the part that has the immob key in it?? As thats the part I have. By immob I meant a separate cat 1 immob that has been fitted afterwards.

Yeah - there's a ring around the ignition barrel that responds to the key 'body'

It's unlikely your cat1 has bypassed that as well

The car has a standard immobiliser transponder on it from the factory and is normally located on the piece with the key blade. Its a little black square about 1cm by 0.5cm without this the car will not start and even changing the barrels wont work as the keys are coded to the immobiliser in the ECU.

Nah, that's not quite true.....

There's a little box in the dash that teh immo ring communicates to. that's what it's coded to (not the ECU)

I'd whip off the black cover round the steering lock & hot wire it. You'd be amazed how easy it is, the key is just a switch.

Changing the ignition barrel is not a simple job.
