How's about this for a complete rip-off?

Called my insurance company today to ask how much (if anything) some mods would load my car insurance by.

1. Replacement alloy wheels fitted with winter tyres = no increase.

Smiley face so far! :D

2. Tuning Box, power increase 143PS to 175PS...... INSURANCE DECLINED!!!!! Policy would be cancelled if I did this mod!

AAARGHHHH! :-o [:@]

3. Genuine rear spoiler fitted, colour coded. - £159 EXTRA ON MY POLICY!!!!!! :wtf: The guy sounded embarrassed when he told me this one. I explained I was 48 years old and this proposed addition was not a flipping whale fin spoiler but a tasteful four inch extension to the existing mini one, and was a genuine factory accessory. No midlife crisis here! LOL

In any case I guess the tuning box will now have to wait till my insurance runs out and I'll be taking my business elsewhere!!!!

Oh and in case you are all wondering who the insurance company is - it's Direct Line!

What Insurance companies are you folk using? What ones are mod-friendly?

Well it asks you on the insurance "Is your car modified", just do some dummy quotes now and click yes, see what it says.

Well at the time I got my quotes my car was totally standard. Looks as if they've got me by the short and curlies now. Hadn't even started to think about any modding at that point...

Here's another lesson well-learned!

I use Admiral and my Revo tune (180 - 210ish) only cost me £130 + £25 admin fee extra) I'm 24 with 4y NCB...

Inc these days is mad anyway, a mate of mine has a Rover 600 diesel and that costs him £130+ pm! He's 22 with 1y NBC.

Car Inc = Rip Off. Thank you all you stupid boy racers and whiplash scammers....

When you put accessories on your insurance, like the spoiler or skirts, does the cost your paying cover the extra value you are putting on the car as well?

A mate of mine has a mini ONE and hes done an engine conversion for it to a 1.6 supercharged (mini cooper S engine).

He's also dropped it on its back side with some bbs reps.

He's insured with Adrian Flux and his premium is the same as it was with a standard insurance company before any mods.

I'll be moving to Adrian Flux in Jan when i hopefully get a 20VT

I'm thinking about telling my insurance company where to shove their policy! lol SERIOUSLY!!!!

They told me if I chose to fit the tuning box their underwriters would cancel the policy, but since it was the underwriters, not me, that was cancelling the policy I would have no penalties to pay....

Will look into this further, because this has seriously pissed me off!!!! And it actually takes quite something to do that! :p

Just done a quick comparison quote and Admiral are just about as cheap as my standard (no mods) Direct Line policy with me saying I have non-standard alloys and a spoiler fitted. They also allow for tuning boxes, though this would put the policy up by about £120 P/A.

Food for thought....

You don't want to have a 'cancelled insurance policy' held against you for future insurance though.

DL have recently switched well away from modified cars.

Should cover the replacement of the accessories if they form part of the claim. It is a subjective point if fitted accessories such as spoilers increase the value of a car.

Just be carefull with that one. Most insurers ask "have you ever had insurance declined". If the insurer/underwriter cancels your policy, you then have to say yes to that question!

That may prove expensive!

If you have told them to cancel it, you havent been declined though?!

This. Also wouldn't expect mods to be covered with any of the main insurers, most will be standard parts replacement only, you may have more luck with specialist insurers like flux etc though I'm not really sure to be honest.

Well don't worry, people. I'm hopping-mad right now, but I'm old enough and wise enough to know never to make big decisions when in a mood! lol Will sleep on things and think things over for a couple of days.

i can see why they declined the tuning box, if the engine went bang and seat dont cover it you may need to go through the insurance. Makes sense on, spoiler doesnt.

Its the spoiler insurance hike that has really got my blood boiling, and the fact that they seem to be treating a 48 year old experienced driver with a clean licence and without any vehicle insurance claims in over 15 years like I'm a fekking boy racer with a chaved-up Corsa! No offence intended to the young drivers on here! LOL

So my insurance jumps by over 40% just because I would be adding a genuine factory spoiler to my car???? Are they saying, therefore, that I would be 40% more likely to have a claim if a tasteful, colour coded 4 inch wide piece of plastic is attached to my car?????

I'm thinking that the underwriters may have been "spooked" if they thought I was proposing to add all the mods in one go and they possibly just picked the highest insurance loading they could think of to discourage the power increase modification and the spoiler hike may have been caught in the mix, so-to-speak....

May call DL back once I calm down and ask them to do a quote for the spoiler addition itself, and emphasise that this is a genuine factory accessory that would be colour coded to match the car.

And yea, I woke up still cheesed-off! lol
