Insurance increase!

Dunno about you guys, I was hovering around the comparison sites for insurance as I'm due to renew soon and I was shocked!

Last year's price was £250 (with AXA) for myself and wife commuting with 10k mileage. Done the usual pre renewal search and it came up with this!!!

I think car insurance has increased across the board. My other car is a BMW 318d Touring and the insurance is as much as the Cupra... makes no sense.

Before I got my Cupra the quotes I was getting did seem high compared to other similar cars I had. Paid around £300 a year on a Golf R/M135i a few years ago with less NCD. The cheapest quote I could get on the Cupra in Sept was £440.

Is there an issue with the Cupra?

My last policy was £250 with the same company for the current policy! I have a good postcode etc and I've never heard of car theft that much here.

Only issue I can see is lots of them are being stolen. All seem to be new models which are unmodified too. There’s a few threads on here and FB about cars being stolen.

That’s the only reason I can see the increase.

Best thing to do is get the car and do some mods to it so it doesn’t look Stock anymore

Lots of insurers will buy in business and offer very competitive premiums by giving a first year premium discount to new customers, or incentives such as 12 months cover for the price of 10 in the first year to entice customers to move to them. So @Peller, if you moved to Axa last year, they may have employed these tactics to attract your business, and your renewal price is now based on their standard premium rates.

Also, motor insurance business is cyclical, going through periods of profit and loss, if the insurance cycle has just been through a loss making period, then insurers will be increasing their premium rates to recover those losses, with the objective of moving back into profit.

Other factors that might be influencing your premium increase;

• Increase in the frequency and cost of claims specific to the Leon Cupra. Even if you’ve been claim free, if there has been an increase in the frequency and cost of claims specific to the Leon Cupra, then it’s likely that all customers with a Leon Cupra will make a contribution to recover those losses through increased premiums.
  
• Vehicle repair costs may be increasing - much of the technology that’s built into cars is probably expensive to replace, which would add to an insurers overall claims costs, and erode their profit margin.

As well as checking out the comparison sites, it’s also worth getting a quote from some of the direct insurers who don’t appear on comparison sites such as Direct Line and Aviva Direct, as they can be quite competitive. You could also try a high street broker who may have special scheme arrangements for performance cars with some insurers. Also worth trying the forum sponsored (Chris Knott and Adrian Flux).

Don't use a comparison site, last year Lloyds Bank insurance was cheap. The renewal came through and the price had shot up. Switched to Halifax now and its cheaper than last year

+1 for Aviva, although I think it’ll depend on what modifications you have as to whether or not they charge extra. Aviva weren’t the cheapest for me, but they were the cheapest well known, long established insurer, and only a few £’s more expensive than cheaper insurance companies I’d never heard of.

A consideration for me when buying car insurance is the claims service if you ever need to use it. My brother is also insured with Aviva and a couple of years ago needed to use their claims service (he had a muntjac deer run out of the nearside hedgerow into his car, causing quite a lot of damage). He found the claims service excellent, as was the standard of repair to his car, and the repairer was manufacturer approved for his make of car, meaning his bodywork / corrosion warranty wasn’t invalidated.

I was with aviva but last year used comparison site for Leon fr. saga insurance cheaper by a long way. Just as well as they charge admin fees when you buy and if you cancel.
this year back to cupra and aviva best price again.
Whichever company you choose shop around at renewal and as others said don’t just use comparison sites.

There was a huge price increase between when I ordered my car in March and when I insured it in July. It has dropped slightly since, as if I search for quotes now I'm about £100 less than July with same details with quotes coming in at £350.

I got my renewal through and that was higher than the one I got off esure bye almost £100
1st central was £574.95
Esure was £487.55

I was with Aviva previously, but the renewal was crazy. I switched to admiral in the end, and we use their multi car discount.

2 leons and smart car cost £1000 with aviva and one leon declared 5mod on it.I think not bad.
Leaf ev was £500 with esure and after lowered the car they want £1000 because they said im a boyrace!
Aviva was £480 with mods again.

It seems to be the case with all types of insurance at the moment that you need to swap companies nearly every year to get the lowest, most competitive quotes. Staying loyal just doesn't pay !

Just renewed again. Always shop about but they’re always the cheapest.
Price has gone up this year though, as others have said it seems to be across the board.
I limit the miles to 3000 a year on my LCR and used as 2nd car but it’s still cost over £300 this year for the first time ever. My daily Volvo V70 R design is near £500.
All this keyless start crap seems to be sending premiums sky high again like in the 80’s when you could steel a ford Orion with a coat hanger ( and then use it as an aerial) lol.
Now the buggers don’t even need to touch your car to start it...

Ordered the springs from japan and helped the car look more acceptable.ev-s will be fun as bottom heavy and fly in fast in the city.next electric car deposit paid now and biggest mistake was the seat after mercedes.

Not sure it's keyless to blame as the standard MY19 Cupra comes out £40 more expensive for me than the Lux which is keyless. Insurers seem to favour the Lux model for some reason.

OP - I insured my 290 with Admiral last month @ £360. Obviously depending on your circumstances every quote will be different but the other quotes I had were very similar to what you’ve been offered.

My insurance quote for this year (Literally renewed yesterday) was more with standard insurance companies with no mods than with a mod specialist company with loads of mods declared, figure that one out
