I've got a strange problem with my Seat Altea (56 Reg, 1.9 TDI)

It's an odd intermittent issue which is proving hard to diagnose, I'm hoping someone in this forum has had something similar.

There is a tapping/knocking noise that starts happening seemingly at random, it has happened about 3 times in the past 2 months. When the noise starts it will continue to get worse and worse as I drive further. This then results in the car juddering and loss of performance (at this point I've stopped and called the RAC for recovery).

The first time I had the car recovered to a garage and when the garage test drove it to witness the issue, it didn't happen at all! The car was then fine for a month. The garage suspected a few different possibilities but said without witnessing the noise they can't be sure what is causing it.

The second time I was recovered the RAC chap manage to witness the knocking sound, he jacked it up to take a look and after placing it back on the ground - the issue had gone! Here are his notes:
"Knocking noise (metallic noise) noted on test drive with customer
felt like nsf
jacked up nsf no faults found ran car with nsf wheel off the ground seemed ok
road tested again no noises noted"

So it is now running again but who knows when the noise is going to come back.

I've uploaded a video of the noise here:

can't make it into a URL as i've got under 15 posts.

The video is driving in a straight line going from near 0mph to ~60mph

Any ideas??

Is it gear box? Faster you go more frequent the knocking? It definitely sounds like something cyclical with something bouncing off it.

Ended up getting rid of it.

Started happening more often - jacking it up and putting it back down would get rid of the noise for a week or so. God knows what it was!
