I have enjoyed an FR TDI for the last 2 years and am looking to change it. The FR has too much torque for a 2WD car, it just spins the wheels if over enthusiastic in the dry, or AT ALL TIMES in the wet.

I see the fourtrack seems to have the same engine, so is it as much fun ? And is the 4WD setup to work like an audi quattro or is it the sloppy "assists you a bit in the wet" setup that Audi and VW use on 4x4's ? Given its image and extra height im not sure its the performance option.

I have tried an audi A4 TDI quattro and the VW option and they are good ! Anyone have a freetrack - opinions ?

Hi,
The Freetrack is a good/unusual car but it is more stable than the FR in power delivery.
It is not as quick, obviously - But it does use the Assist you when needed 4x4 facility.

Which actually works quite well in this car, if you can it's worth trying one and comparing it - there are some good offers on new ones at presnt.

I've had a Freetrack for about 6 months now after trading my Leon FR TDi

I needed more space for 2 kids and all their kit but still wanted something a bit different

I don't notice much performance loss and the 4wd does kick in when you lose grip at the front

It's surprisingly sporty for such a big car and there's still plenty grunt from the engine

The car comes loaded with kit and looks much better in the flesh than in photos - mines track grey which goes well with the big bumpers

Only down side with the car being heavier is that I struggle to get any more than 38ish mpg

Go get a test drive - I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised!

I bought the Altea XL for my missus and whilst it is a super family car we really, really should have bought the 4x4 Freetrack. We live way out in the wilds and twice we've got stuck on farmland due to boggy ground.

On the road our XL is more than fast enough (1.8 Turbo, 160 BHP) and the gigantic boot space + adjustable rear seats are a dream for families.

Just wish I'd bought the Freetrack!
