Got an issue with my Samsung Galaxy S9+ phone that I can't solve, and hoping you good folk can shed some light on what's going on.

Various apps such as the EE app wil not allow a log in or app opening, giving a message that the browser is currently set to block JavaScript, but Javascript is very definately switched on in the phone settings.

Any ideas what could cause this contradiction - just joined EE and need to get the app installed and working, but hitting this brick wall at the moment, thank you

🔍 1. Misleading Error – Not Actually JavaScript

The "JavaScript is disabled" message often doesn't literally mean JavaScript is off — it may be a catch-all error for:

  • WebView issues
  • Corrupted app cache
  • Outdated app or Android System WebView component
  • App or OS settings blocking embedded browsers

✅ Step-by-Step Fixes to Try:

✅ 1. Clear EE App Cache and Data

Go to:
Settings > Apps > EE > Storage > Clear Cache and Clear Data

Then try launching the app again.

✅ 2. Update Android System WebView

The EE app (and others) often use the Android WebView component to display login screens, which needs to be current.

  • Go to Google Play Store
  • Search for “Android System WebView”
  • Tap Update (if available)

Also check:

  • Google Chrome — some versions of Android rely on Chrome as the system WebView — update this too.

✅ 3. Enable JavaScript in Chrome (for WebView)

Just to double-check:

  • Open Chrome
  • Visit chrome://settings/content/javascript
  • Ensure JavaScript is allowed

✅ 4. Set Chrome as Default Browser Temporarily

Sometimes the embedded browser fails if the default browser is not compatible or is restricted.

Set Chrome as the default:

  • Settings > Apps > Default apps > Browser app > Set to Chrome

Then reopen the EE app.

✅ 5. Reinstall the EE App

Uninstall the EE app, then reinstall it from the Google Play Store to ensure a clean install and remove any corrupted app data.

✅ 6. Check Device WebView Implementation

To check which WebView implementation your device is using:

  • Settings > Developer Options
(if not enabled, go to `Settings > About phone > tap "Build number" 7 times)
  • Scroll down to WebView Implementation
  • Select Chrome or Android System WebView, depending on what’s available and up to date.

✅ 7. Try a Different Network Temporarily

Some login or web-based app processes can be blocked or altered by network conditions (especially over mobile data). Try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network, then launch the app.

✅ 8. Reset App Preferences (Non-Destructive)

Resets app permission defaults and could fix system conflicts:

  • Settings > Apps > Tap 3-dot menu (top right) > Reset app preferences

This won't delete app data, just resets things like disabled apps, default apps, background data restrictions, etc.

🛑 Still Not Working?

If none of the above fixes it, the issue might lie with:

  • A broken WebView implementation on Android 10 or earlier
  • EE app version not compatible with older devices
  • Or a conflict caused by a third-party app (e.g. ad blockers or firewalls)

🧪 Advanced Test:

Try logging in via the EE website in Chrome. If the login works there but not in the app, it’s definitely a WebView problem inside the EE app rather than the phone or network.
