I've just spanked some cash on a 57 plate 1.4tdi and have a couple of questions:
Firstly its only got one key, i want to get a spare and program it to the car, is this a dealer only job? If its not dealer only how is it done?
and secondly is it possible to get a new service record and get it stamped up by seat assuming all work was done by them? As it only got 14k on the clock i'm assuming its only had one service or is due one about now? Also what is the recommended time period for changing the cam belt?
Thanks in advance!

yes a key is a dealer only thing if you want it programed (about £100). they are serviced at evry 10k and cambelt is ever 4 year of 60k depending on which comes first

Where did you get the car from?

I'd be a bit concerned if i didn't get a spare key. If it was from a main dealer i'd get back there and ask where it is.

Also what is wrong with the service book you got with the car?

You can get a new service book from seat, and the dealer who did the work sould be able to stamp it for you.

A key will set you back about £120, including coding. It will need to be done by a dealer.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like i'll be taking a trip to bournemouth seat in the near future to get a spare key and a stamped up service book!

I'd also be a bit concerned if a car of this age did not still "have" its service booklet - has this been a finance reclaim or something more dodgy - you know the thing - if its been reclaimed then has it been thrashed before being picked up - take care with your money!

I think that that engine is chain driven - its a 3 cylinder jobbie.

The car was a category D write off. I bought it fully repaired but have no problem with cat d cars, i'm sure many people do but i did a thorough inspection before handing over cash. Obviously it being a cat d it only came with the v5 and one key. Assuming that the other key and book pack issued with the car were lost somewhere in between transition from previous owners to insurance company.

hmm dont really see the logic behind it would have gone for a slightly older car with a less colourful history tbh

There's a whole thread on the mk3 section about recoding keys... does this not apply to the mk4?? All you need is a key with an unprogrammed transponder (Ebay), vagcomm and one original key? You can get a blade cut at timpsons or similar? Or a guy off eBay but I'm not sure I'd trust that?
