Knackered Leon

Evening all.
I'm a relative newb to leons, bought one a few months back.
It's only a 105bhp 2007 tdi sport (it's for the wife and she's nuts enough so she having anything mentally powerful)
She complained that it was making a noise last week, piped my head under the car and it sounded like it was blowing from the flexi pipe at the back of the engine, but only under higher revs.

So today I've taken it to the garage. It's one I trust, I've used them many times over the last 10 years with my modified pugs

So they tell me there's no exhaust issue, they checked the turbo for play, they also checked to see if the injectors were seated correctly (apparently this is a common issue?)

They have told me that they believe it's terminal either a holed piston or big end bearing.
It's still as noisy as ever.

It seems to run on 3 cylinders some times, lots of black smoke under heavy acceleration.
So my thoughts and any help/ideas would be appreciated

I can't see there being anything on the piston, this would surely show some sign in the block, diesel in the oil, low/high engine oil pressure? I'm going to get a compression test done on it to see.

Big end bearing, would this be noisy even at idle?

Maybe a knackered valve? But this would be noisy at all revs?

Maybe a failed injector? But again, wouldn't this be noisy at all revs?

If I have to change the engine then I will, but want to be 100% sure first. Was hoping somebody on here may have had this happen to them

Thanks in advance

Have you tried checking the EGR valve? This might explain the smoke issue. They tend to get choked with carbon and stick open.

Have you ran any diagnostics on it to see if there is any error codes at all? Even though the engine management light isn't coming on doesn't mean it's not registered a code.

If you use VCDS then you would be able to check the injectors are working properly too.

I've got a vid of it but not sure how to post it on here.
They didn't plug plug it in, as I told them not to after they said it was terminal. Didn't want to spend any more money on it.

My bro in law came over yesterday and had a look, he thinks its a top end issue.

So I've just taken the rocker cover off, the cam has a lobe with abnormal wear.

This is what I was going to suggest but could only confirm it with a sound recording.
U will need, camshaft, full set of hydraulic tappets/buckets (people call them different things) rocker cover gasket,I would change ure oil and filter as well incase u have any swarf in the system.
