He takes the view that SEAT/VW-Audi spent billions of €s/£s developing the 1.8T's performance vs reliability parameters, so it's dumb to go & alter the setup.

True but VW have made themselves a double edged sword, they promote cross brand use of components which is why the 1.8T is used in Skoda Estates, Audi TT's and 50 other makes and models.

It's good news as they can keep costs down.

The downside is that a recall could cost millions accross lots of brands

So I'd argue that they play things VERY safe to be sure they don't get stung

My experience

40k Miles in a remapped Golf GTi 1.8T and 50k Miles in a remapped LCR no big issues.

The basic engine is so strong that a 180bhp engine can have a turbo swap, be running 330bhp+ on standard internals.......there are plenty of examples of this type of conversion.

How far you can go with a 1.8T......well one forum member is aiming for 600bhp+

I know you can't get it right all the time, but VAG spend millions on development and then still churn out shyte MAF's, coil packs and other various bits and bobs (plastic water pump impellors).

A remap will put slightly more strain on a vehicle, but how that bares out often depends on:

a) how the car is driven
b) how well the car is maintained & serviced
c) the warm up and warm down practice utilised by the driver

Every car has its own character / weaknesses. We've seen literally thousands of remapped cars on this site over the years, and many people jump to the conclusion the remap is at fault all too often when actually its a VAG part.

Choose a remap agent carefully, be respectful to the car, and you'll get equally the mileage of a poorly maintained car if not more. Can't be 100% prescriptive, but after 5 remapped cars I'd still have another.

If you drive the car "normally" i cant see as a re-map would affect wear rates of any thing maybe he's just covering his own back or he does'nt now how to work on a modded car
After all it's not asif your going to be doing Grand prix starts at every set of lights that you stop at.

As said above if you do granprix starts from every set of lights then it'll will cause wear and damage. But even if you own a car that hasn't been moddified in anyway and you drove it like you stole it, it will end up with the same type of wear/damage if not worse.

did you not get it checked for why it was smoking rather than ditching the map you'd paid for?

Has T.Spark got a new turbo or the existing 130PD turbo...if so I am not suprised it is smoking pushing what he is (200bhp?)

Going slightly off topic here, but also related to the above C-C maps.

I had a Phase 1 custom-code loaded onto my Ibiza TDi and it didnt smoke... at all! Just check the cadwell pictures I have, you dont see ANY smoke. Same with the pictures even at Santa Pod.

However, for a laugh I took my car to RS Tuning to see jsut how much power with everything other than the turbo uprated. It ran 201.7bhp with RS tuning making me aware that it smokes like mad as the turbo simply cant get the air in to burn the fuel, and that boost was so high it could blow up at any point! Was only doing it for a nice little test, and it was fun! However 5,000 odd miles later of NORMAL driving (give you a example of 46mpg over the last 540 miles of a tank) the turbo is giving up the ghost. Well its not popped, but im pretty sure it wouldnt be long until it does.

Hitting just over 29PSi of boost on a standard turbo is going to make it blow up. But normal maps that most tuning companies would do, including RS are well within the figures for things like turbo's etc.

A friend is running around 180bhp on a PD130 turbo from RS Tuning and not had one problem.. and trust me he isnt easy on it. Fact.
