i've got a quick question about the door speakers on my LCR. i know that they're 16.5cm at the front (don't know about the rears) but here is my query........ i've got two ten inch rockford fosgate DVC subs with a matching amp in the boot and a half-decent sony head unit up front but my problem is with the door speakers. if i have the stereo turned up at all they distort with the bass or make the doorcards vibrate like mad, i've read somewhere that you can get some sort of capacitor/resistor type thing that can removed the low frequencies to make the speakers more midrange/mid-bass, is this true? if not, can i just get hold of some 16.5cm midrange/mid-bass replacements and still use the original tweeters? as the bass in the boot takes care of all the low end stuff i'd like all the rest of the sound to be a bit better than it is at the moment.
cheers, karlos ;)

ok, forget what i said about replacements............... its late and i'm tired (night shift :( ) i understand that you can't just replace a speaker with another and expect to lose all the bass. so instead can i get some sort of crossover and tune out the bass instead?

a couple of crossover components can be set up that way i belive they will also deal with the sound better and stop the distortion.

It doesnt have to be that expensive a set of Infinity Kappa components cost about a ton.

Easy enough to replace them all Karl, the factory tweeters can be replaced with kenwood items - direct push fit. You have to remove the door card anyway so why not do a proper job whilst you're in there.

Best way would be to remove the stock rubbish, fit an MDF mount to the door and put the new speakers on that. Run fresh cable back to the headunit ( allows you to refit the stock crap if you want)

for the money these are spot on http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/kenwood-kfcp707-p-4792.html?cadid=7f0f4020972a85a7546d0f805bf006ed

For the doorcards, i used a combination of brownbread ( sound deadener) and some airconditioning filter foam taped to the inside of the door panel to cut down some of the vibration.

Below shows the crossover mounted and wiring for it, at this point the OEM speakers were still on the door with their crap plastic mounts.

could buy a decent headunit that you can alter crossover values on... i have the 25th anniversary kenwood and get almost no distortion at max volume.. not a cheap option mate but it does sound good. you can listen whenever you want.

Im not a fan of kenwood.

:( i still highly recomend the infinity kappa series.

the sound deadening looks good but id use spray glue instead of tape if you listen to loud music as when one little bit of tape peels off its going to vibrate something horrible in there

if you havent tryed their top units then i would agree with you... previously i had the kdc9090r and now the 25th... both are awesome units and come highly recommended by most audio shops..

Agreed, their mid to bottom end units are dull and lifeless, Pioneer sound better at that end of the market.

I've used Infinity before and wasn't impressed with the build quality on the cheaper speakers - those kenwoods ( for the price as I said) are spot on.

James - that stuff has been in there over a year now and to my knowledge hasn't come loose yet, it's not standard tape, it's proper aircraft gaffer tape - we used some to stick a poster to the bricks in the garage when we moved in, 14 months later through the summer and winter, the tape is still stuck firmly to the wall - not going anywhere :)

Oh i didnt say you havnt done i good job of it lol. i was just pointing it out before he graps the scotchtape from the office lol.

Fair enough on the speakers though. but i loved my kappas. :) also had a set of rainbow ones in the cali and they were nice.

i would love to do my doors like yours Uncle but have just never got around to it.. i put a ton of soundproofing in my boot which must cost me a couple of tenths but thats as far as i got...

think ill have to buy you a pint or ten next week and leave you the keys :)

just kidding mate..

the thing is i'm quite happy with the speakers in there at the moment and i'd rather spend money elsewhere on the car if i can. so if there is a relatively cheap way just to lose the low-end frequencies from the factory speakers then i'd rather do that. i'm going to have to dynomat inside the boot panel at some point but i'm not an audiophile so i won't be spending lots on speakers and stuff.

Heh it's not that much hard work, just time and space .... was easy to do whilst i had all the car in bits to fit everything else :)

If you're going to go to the bother of dynamatting the boot, not spending up to £100 on decent door speakers is just plain wrong :ban: :p

You can buy inline bass filters from most ICE shops, if you really don't want to change the speakers. Only cost a fiver or so for a pair and do an OK job. Certainly a good enough job to be used on factory fitted speakers.

Halfords and most ICE dealers sell them. I think they are branded 'Bass Blockers' or something and are made by Autoleads.

I've come to the conclusion (no offence meant to anybody when I say this) that most people on this site aren't interested in proper car audio or getting the best from their system, so I've decided to tailor my answers to the level of the question asked

If somebody wants genuine advice, I'll go out of my way to give it. But some people just want to argue any facts you post and spout off the same rubbish that they were told in the shop. And since, apparently, you can't argue with what an ICE dealer tells you, there is little point in trying :(

I am going to upgrade the speakers in mine to standard paper ones! Put me an inline filter in and do some more sound deadening, take all the amps out ... reckon that will sort out the SQ a treat hehehe

Karl - if you want to do some comparisons, bring a CD you like along to the next meet and we'll run some comparisons - it's the only way to see if there's anything you can gain by changing speakers :)

I'm not in the bunch of people who like to change things for no reason ... hell i spent 7 years in yorkshire, got pockets 2 inches wide and 3 foot deep :)

Don't forget to remove your sub from it's box and put it into an off-the-shelf one from any old ICE dealer, re-run your power cables so they run alongside your RCA's and use bell wire as speaker wire, as it's cheaper

thanks for that rob, i'm not saying that i won't ever change my speakers but it isn't a priority either. once my car is handling better and i'm happy with the perforance then i'll concentrate on the ICE.
