LCR vs STI Type R

This afternoon i had an organised race with a work colleague in his 1997 STI Type R. An import with just a filter and exhaust.

Now before you go flaming me on racing, this was not on public roads! Anyone who knows what i do for a living and where i live will know i have access with permission to an airfield!

I also hit a new top speed today in the R but more of that later :D

Over the past couple of months there's been a lot of banter in our work on which car was quicker/faster! Its the only real 2 ''fast'' cars in the carpark. I was a little worried tbh as yesterday my clutch had been slipping and i know he'd have me off the line!

With permission this afternoon we had a couple of tests from standstill and rolling.

Test 1 was from a rolling 40mph start, i was in 3rd gear at around 2800rpm, nitrous activated on 2sec build 50% start power. 3 beeps of the horn and we were away. He initially pulled on me by a car length but the nitrous kicked in and i was at 80mph in a blink reaching for 4th! My nose was just in front by about 1/2 car length and wham nitrous again all the way to the limiter, changed into 5th and now he is more than a cars length behind. Nitrous all the way to the line until appox 130mph and i reach for 6th. Im at least a coach length in front and the foot is planted for a top speed run. 140mph/150mph/160mph and the gap had increased to approx 2 coach lengths! pulling! The sti had given up but i later found it had no more grunt at 150mph! It has such a short ratio box that max speed is around 150mph! Anyway car still pulling at 160mph and off the clock it goes! The needle was pointing in the space where 170 should be, (The needle was hovering over the display window for the odometer reading) Revs were at 7000rpm and my GPS was reading 161mph.
I braked firmly and spun round for a gentle stroll back to let the oil temp cool down! It was reading 150C.

We had a 20min break to let the cars cool down and then we tried a standstill start! The 1st test i completely mucked up as the car bogged down and span so i gave up and reversed back to the start mark! 2nd standing start, we had someone with a foghorn and after the 3rd blast, off we went! I was more gentle on the launch at approx 3000rpm and i fed it in this time very smoothly to avoid wheelspin, no nitrous activated, it was over too quick! Reached for 2nd and the scooby was off, it was a good 5 car lengths in front already by the time i reached for 2nd! 2nd gear and nitrous activated tail end but it was over to quick and into 3rd. By this time the sti was about 1 coach length in front. 3rd gear/4th gear and 5th gear and i had clawed it back to even stevens. 6th gear nitrous activated and i was pulling past (about 130mph) Again the gap grew as the car went past 150mph and top speed run was on again but this time i ''only'' managed GPS 158mph. Oil temp had went past the 150 mark so we stopped it there and called it a day

He has to plaster my face with drink at our xmas do on friday night for losing :D

0-60 and he demolished me :( 0-100mph and the sti was a good few lengths in front :( 0-130mph was even stevens :) 0-150mph was mine :D
50- top end was definitely in my favour :D

Just shows what short gearing does for acceleration. His car is in the region of 300bhp/285lbft. Mines is heavier but a bit more powerful at approx 330bhp/350lbft!

Anyway the headline of the day was 161 GPS :D

There was more than enough braking room! Approx 2miles flat tarmacced surface then the ground gets a bit rough right at the end. Approx another 1/2 mile!

You should be familiar with the stretch of road that runs directly parallel to the airfield DPJ ;) That is approx 3 miles in length before braking for a roundabout and then onto another 2 mile stretch!

all comes down to traction i suppose, a mate has the same, and they are lightning fast.

have you done any uprating on your LCR, gaskets etc? or is everything standard? e.g. manifold gaskets, head , rocker etc. :) 161 is pretty impressive!

can you sell track time on the airfield? :D

Revs at 7000rpm so definitely no more left!

Although for some reason the fuel cut did not kick in! Limiter must be set just above.

1 of the golden rules with nitrous is not to hit the limiter! Naturally the ecu will cut the fuel but the nitrous injector will keep supplying nitrous. Not good!

I can honestly say i dont think it will go any faster! 161 seems to be the max although i have heard rumours of hippychick netting a 162 at the limiter in germany! Must have been a steep downhilled stretch of road for her to get that speed with only a remap!

Everything standard in the car so far although clutch and flywheel are next on the shopping list. Luckily no slipping at all today but i think its close to the end of its life as it was slipping like a biatch last night!

Two parallel private roads, one more private than the other . ;) Well familiar with it - I've been looking at yours longingly for years. :D The rough part is at the Northern end?

I prefer the stretch south of the 'service area' for a really long fun blast tho.

Nitrous is cheating a little bit and i dont think i'd stand a chance off nitrous, even rolling tbh! My car is 11 secs quicker 80-140mph on nitrous as opposed to no nitrous use.

The only way i think i'd pass was when he was at top speed and had no more left to go!

0-60 is unbelievable in the Sti Type R, i miss my old scooby :( I'd love to have traction like that again! The way it roared off was unbelievable! [B)]

Mitchy, I remember you being a fairly youngish driver; similar in age to me (I am 23 tomorrow - well today but technically I am not 23 until I have woken up!)

I know this is off topic, but if you are under 25, how did you insure your car with all these mods and how on earth did you manage to insure a Scooby? I wanted an STI before I bought my old S3 (now got a LCR) but they wouldn't even touch me on a standard WRX.

On a side note, I renewed my insurance today and having lost 2 years NCB (down to one year) and gained 3 points for speeding (SP30) me being a complete nutter decided to tell the insurance to renew it saying I have a remap... I am getting Jabbad next week!

Nice one !
Very good test.

You have 330bhp/350lbft without the nitrous, right ?

No 275bhp/305lbft without nitrous.

Approx 330bhp/350lbft with although depending on where in the rev range i activate nitrous torque can go upto around 415 lbft.

Yes not a problem, remove the bottle, remove the nitrous line and then remove the pulsoids (Injectors) Progressive controller is easy enough to take out aswell! About 45mins to completely remove it!
