Hi,

I've not driven my Cupra R for a while as I now have a company car. I went to take it out today to show it some love and I couldn't get it started. I think it's simply a dead battery as when I went to unlock using the fob nothing happened, so I had to use the key in the door. When I put the key in the ignition I get dash lights but I didn't hear the fuel pump go at all. I also get the interior light when I open the door. Turning the key to the starting position does nothing. I hooked it up to my company using jump leads but this made no difference. On turning the key the display on the dash does all weird and the clock resets.

Am I being a spaz with the jump leads or could there potentially be something else wrong?

Next step is to get the battery out and borrow a mains charger.

Cheers.

is it possible for the fob to be dead so not disarming the immobiliser? just a random guess as you said the fob didnt unlock the car lol

I guess it's possible, but the displays going weird and the clock resetting when you try to crank it? I thought the immobiliser worked on a chip within the key? I did wonder about the immobiliser though as it seemed weird that hooking it up using the jump leads did nothing.

Even though you have used jump leads it could still be the battery. May well be that a cell has collapsed which would cause a short.

Try a different battery on the car.

You can't jump start a car with jump leads if the battery is entirely flat. The battery will be drawing any amps it can to charge itself.

Leave it connected for fifteen minutes or so, with the donor car running. Then try again. Or charge the battery outside the car.

was it going wierd straight off or after you tried jumping it?
You need to get a charged battery or confirm yours is before going further.

I had a similar thing on my old Corrado (bit more basic I know) and it turned out to be a dead starter motor, had exactly the same symptoms, ran fine, parked it up, came back 5 hours later and it was completely dead, no dash lights or anything, jump start didnt work. I diagnosed by doing a bump start which kicked it into life, not sure if it can be done on a more modern car though...

No. The immobiliser is completely separate from the remote central locking/alarm fob, and is not powered by a battery. The reading coil energises it, a bit like an RFID tag, but very short-range. Think about it, the "dumb" key with no remote fob still starts the car.

It's the battery..... I know from selling cars that even if you do get it started and run it for a day when you go back to it next mOrning it will be dead ! Replace the battery. Bet it starts.

I agree with akchappers, andycupra and the rest: sounds like a worn-out battery that will not hold charge, so even if you do boost it up it won't last. How old is the battery, anyway?

I did get it sorted. Apologies for not posting sooner, bad form I know.

It turns out you have to hold the bonnet catch down, as if the bonnet was closed, and then it'll turn over off the jump leads. We got it started, drove it around and it's held charge fine. I even left it for a few days and it started again no problem.

Thanks for all the replies though.

never heard of that one. I really think this is a red herring, you probably left the leads on for longer to enable it to have enough charge for jumping.

That's odd. You shouldn't need the bonnet closed to start the car. I think something managed to drain your battery.

Something similar happened on my .MK2, car was completely dead. Yet after using a heavy duty mains booster pack it started and has been fine since.

I have seen other posts regarding something about the bonnet needing to be closed, I don't know if it's a safety feature or part of the alarm system? I vaguely remember something about the switch going faulty and immobilising cars, but I thought it was either the Golf or Polo that was susceptible?

No doubt someone will chime in with the correct reason.
