Any body ever had gearbox oil leak from the black cap. Looks as if it's had a new cap and they have hit it in the middle rather than the sides to get it on. And now it's leaking oil from centre of the cap.

Do you mean the black cap at the side of the gearbox where the shim is installed? Sounds like someone damaged the cap when hammering it in. You probably need a new one and get it hammered in using a block of wood to avoid damaging the cap.

ok so I managed to seal the hole up by cleaning the area and peeling back the rubber coating, I used a 2 pence and some gasket sealer which worked, i used some coma 75/90 from Halfords and it took about 500ml to get it back upto the full level. problem i have now is i can hear a knocking noise in the gearbox when the car is parked up. not sure if this noise was here before or not. there isn't any patern to the noise.

1. not using gearbox oil from TPS causing the noise
2. try shim mod if not already done
3. gear box is knackered.

I would order a new cap and shim from any VAG garage. They're only a few pounds and really easy to install - only a few drips of oil will come out if the car is fairly level. Opie oils on this forum may recommend a good gearbox oil which, although relatively expensive, will be a lot cheaper than a new box if it cures the problem.
