Started my car this morning and drove to work which is 10 miles away and temp gauge was reading 0 all the way. No lights came flashing up and no beeps. Engine coolant is fine and at the right level. once i got to work i parked the car left it running for 10 min and the needle went back up to 90. Did the same on the way home! I changed the coolant temp sensor about a 2 weeks ago as a fault came up, but didnt think that would be the cause as its been 2 weeks since i replaced it and been fine up until now.

...mine has done exactly the same mate...been searching the forum for ideas without joy, gonna book mine in to get my sensor changed and hope for the best!

The car might not get up to temp in only 10minutes... all depends how you drive though!

The reason it got up to temp at your work though is A) It's already been driven! and won't take as long to get up to temp B) It's stationary so there's no flow through the radiator

on zero? you mean on 60 as this is the lowest on the gauage isnt it?

the symptoms sound like the thermostat could be suffering. eg if its open all the time then the car will take an age to warm up.

regards temp sensor being new and cant be that, i would say that new electrical parts can fail, seem to be they fail pretty quickly or last a long time.

However as the car got up to temp when stationary id say change the thermostat.

Did mine some time ago, not because there was any issue, but just it took a bit longer than usual to get to temp and now its much better. up to 90 in a much shorter time.

Yeah I meant 60 sorry. Well I changed the thermostat last weekend and no improvement. I did a test on the thermostat I took out by putting in a cup of hott water and it opened, when cold water was poured on it, it closed. My guess at the moment is that the new sensor I got is faulty, fingers crossed because don't know what to do after that point. Also not sure but after installing my new thermostat I found that it needs to go in vertical to the engine and I don't think I did that not sure if that would make a difference? The thing is the car runs as good as it always has done so I would of thought it has to be something electrical.

Just for reference. I bought a new CTS again, this time from Seat, last week and so far since its been alright. The temp gauge has been working fine. Dont know if I was unlucky with the one I bought off ebay. Atleast its all working fine for now :D

when you replace the temp sensor and thermostat, its so easy to trap air in the system as you loose coolant. air locks can work there way out after a little time. the best way to make sure you dont have an air lock, start the car up, remove coolant cap and keep squeezing the coolant hoses. i did this for around 5mins and you can see air bubbles coming out the coolant tank.

I have a question kind of related to this so I hope you guys can advise. Anyway, after a good drive the other day, a lot mixed driving, I pulled up outside my house and left the engine running while I sat in the car to let the turbo cool down. I fiddle about with a few things in the glove box for 30secs and then glanced at the clock cluster to see that the coolant temp guage was reading over 90degrees, just under the '3/4 full' mark if you want to put it like that. I watched intently for another 2mins and the guage gradually dropped down to 90degrees again before switching the car off and hearing the fans running.

I am still using the black temp sensor fitted at the factory, could this be on it's way out? I don't think it's the thermostat as it warms up well, I am also leaking no coolant and the car is running better than ever.

That's a high reading 3/4 on the gauge, mine went there with the pump gone.
Could be your black sender could have been a glitch, could have been the fans turning on late, hard to pin point tbh especially if it generally sticks to 90 deg anyway.

Mine done the same thing this morning got to 3\4 and then the fan kicked in and went back to 90. When driving it stays at 90 fine but if I'm parked up for 10min with the engine running it creeps up there. I'm fed up with it now unless the car blows up I'm just going to leave it. To much time and money messing about with it I've had a new thermostat and two CTS's without no joy. Car runs fine so just wont bother looking at the temp gauge as it's unless, lost all trust in it now. Even if I did fix it I'd always be worried about it going again.

having the same problem today with my lcr, the car was ideling for 5-10 min and the temp gauge went up to the 3/4 mark drove off and has been ok since. i had my water pump change last year metal impellor had new green top cts 5 months ago and had new fans fitted 4months ago. never had any problems before regarding this, could it be a glitch? since ive had the car april 2009 i ve had quite a few things go wrong with it, very annoying and only 20000 miles on the clock!! both fans do kick in for about 10-20 seconds.

booked in to the dealer mon so will let u know what the score is. :)

Thanks for the reply, Lee. It hasn't done this before or since so I am hoping it was just a glitch, the fans did seem delayed if I am honest so who knows but it is due a cambelt and waterpump before the year is out.

Same boat as you with the cambelt and waterpump mate. Getting it done this payday or the next. I fancy the full superpro bushing kit 1st.. :)

On the sensor though, I replaced the black CTS yesterday evening with the green one (2 min job) and this morning the engine temp light didn't flash or beep.

It's been doing it every morning for a while.. I also scraped the 2 prongs (on Lee's sound advice) in the coolant container and topped it up SLIGHTLY...

Seems to have done the trick with no problem this morning, and it's nice to know there's a new coolant sensor on there so any probs in future I can rule that out. Most likely to be thermostat if anything now for me.

Sorry to drag this post back up but my LCR is having same issues I'm sitting here waiting in the car and temp run up to over 90 and fans kicked in only then did the temp drop but then rose I've the 3/4 mark and then fans kicked in. Any one seen there temp going that high?
