The supermarket fuel think is I think an urban myth.

I live close to the Kingsbury Fuel Terminal https://www.eetfuels.com/our-locations/kingsbury-terminal/

Until about three years ago you could see tankers with every conceivable branding (supermarkets, Jet, Murco, etc, and premium brands) queueing up to fill from the same tanks. A neighbour who is an ADR qualified tanker driver confirmed the only difference was that the "pots" (tanker compartments) that were going to have premium high octane fuels, were dosed with an additive prior to filling with the same standard fuel.

Then suddenly most of the tankers became Hoyer branded tankers, apparently according to my neighbour, because too many drivers were becoming aware that there was little or no difference between brands, only between premium and standard fuel.
This change to branding on the tankers is just down to the way that road vehicle fuel is organised nowadays, originally every fuel station brand handled its own brand of fuel all the way through the point from collection at refineries to selling to customers at the fuel stations, now most of this is outsourced to a 3rd party so no real connection between the "fuel maker/refiner" and the fuel filling station that actually sells the fuel to customers, I'd think that even the branding of the fuel filling station will just be "by arrangement" ie franchised. As there is not much money to be made in refining and selling the end product, the major oil (exploration) companies backed out of that part of the action years ago. That is where INEOS and others moved in.

I don't think that either of us two (Mr Pig and RUM4MO) have claimed that there is any difference between the fuels you buy other than the additive packages - but that "small" part is really really important to your engine's life.
Really exactly the same for lubricating oils, same base synthetic product, made useful by adding in additive packages - and once again where a lot of the scope lies to allow "correct" or "cheap" packages to alter the end price.

Edit:- remember that filling station tank and pump maintenance is also required to be getting carried out, another possible area of concern if a 3rd party is covering that, or not.

Found a VAG specialist not too far away so popped in yesterday. Was told it's most likely dirty injectors and is quite common on direct injection VAG petrol engines but seems to effect the ones with cylinder deactivation more. Got a bottle of VW official injector cleaner that's supposedly designed just for this problem so will see how it goes. I'll have to wait until my next full up though as I have some liqui moly injector cleaner in there now and don't want to mix in too many chemicals.

No, I don't think it is. It's common knowledge that the base fuel is the same but the additives are important. 98% of a cup of coffee is water but most coffee drinkers will tell you that the 2% matters!

Over many years I've seen a lot of issues caused by fuel and I can't remember a single one that was not supermarket fuel. It's your choice but I prefer to spend slightly more and avoid it.
