If you don't have satnav, it might be for playing MP3s. The bonus I found with this is if there's an SD card in the slot it's the default source. Whereas e.g. bluetooth you have to select manually every time.
My car has two SD card slots (MIB1), one is for the satnav. I use the other one for music as @Legojon says, purely because the connection is more reliable than is is for USB. If you only have one slots then I'd suggest that this is for MP3s.
