Limp Mode

Hi, my car goes into limp mode but only in 5th or 6th gear when I push the car a bit on the motorway. The engine management light comes on only sometimes. Had the fault code read, and it was boost related. Anybody have some idea of where to start with this? I had a friend advise me to look for a boost leak. I can't hear anything. And he also said to check the vac lines. Do you guys have any other advice? Would be appreciated. Really do like my ibiza. It's a 130PD 1.9tdi engine. Cheers
 
I'm going to say sticky veins and the error was boost charge control - positive deviation?

Do check for boost leaks and then get a long hill and floor it (with engine warm) in 3rd and 4th to redline to see if that clears it. Need a few runs to get the turbo hot enough to burn off the carbon.
 
Had the psi checked. It is running a consistent 22psi boost throughout the revs range. This is from about 1700rpm till 4200rpm. It has been remapped by quantum tuning. I think it could just be a rubbish remap and that is giving me these issues.
 
You need to get that error code to pop up again so you have a better idea of whats going on. It still could be sticky veins if you only do motorway mileage and don't get the temperature hot enough to burn off the carbon.

Were the logs conducted in 5th or 6th gear or just 3rd to check the boost?
 
I have tried to get it to limp mode in lower gears. It won't do it. Only manage it in 5th and 6th gear at around 4000rpm. To check the boost the torque app on android phone was used. With a live feed from the diagnostic port

4000rpm in 6th? How fast are you going?! :blink:
 
It was around the 120ish point that it limp moded. Spoke to a few people they saying that it could be the boost sensor as 22psi is a bit low on boost. Should be atleast 32psi peak boost

Guessing this was on a private road...

The cupra turbos (gt1749vb) are only capable of 26psi maximum so I wouldn't expect the pd130 to be anywhere near 32psi. You're looking at gtb1756vk/2056vk for that sort of boost.

Somebody may correct me but 22psi sounds about right.
 
yes it was on a private road, was testing the car. and my mate has a golf mk4 gt tdi 130PD and his boost is 32psi peak boost. mine has been remapped to 163bhp. His golf was not getting left behind at all, which has lead me to believe something isnt right. I should be able to easily pull away from him. I had the engine management light come on, and the error code read was high boost or something similar. It went off itself. I have been told it could be the boost sensor or something? The turbo sounds ok, doesnt sound out of place

Is this a standard turbo?

If so, I would suggest to your friend that either his boost gauge is way off, or his remap is shockingly poor causing his turbo to massively over-boost and I wouldn't expect the turbo to last very long. The standard GT1749VA will not produce that much boost.

The most common error code to appear for overboosting is "boost charge control - positive deviation". This is caused when the vanes in the turbine side (hot side) of the turbo stick slightly instead of operating freely to control the amount of exhaust gasses passing through the exducer.

These vanes get a build up of carbon over time restricting the movement and as a result too much exhaust gases are directed to the exducer, causing it to spin the shaft, which in turn spins the inducer too fast creating excessive amounts or pressure (boost) and overloading the system.

It could also be caused by a poor remap (N75 map poorly written, irregular boost control etc...)

Now, what can you check?

Depending on how mechanically minded you are, you can test the vanes by moving the actuator arm on the turbo to see if it moves freely or is stiff. This would confirm sticky vanes or the all clear that end.

VCDS log your drive to looks for irregular boost patterns or surging.
 
My mates car isn't remapped at all. His is 32psi peak boost. And it was via a live feed from the diagnostic port onto his phone via the torque app. Same setup was used on my car. The max boost I got up to was 22psi. And cars going in to the lion garage. Vw,Audi,seat specialists. They are going to road test the car and even they said my car should easily pull away from my mates pd130 that had not been remapped. Hopefully the garage find the issue with my car

I will let you guys know about the outcome. Hasn't limp moded in a while now. But it's still getting the once over from the garage. Running a car with a problem will only make it worse lol.
 
The PD130 won't read 32 psi boost via the diagnostic port. It has a 3 bar map sensor meaning it will read 2 bar of boost, which is a smidge under 30 psi. If it's 32 psi total, subtract approx 14.7 for atmospheric pressure which will leave you with standard boost pressure.

You need someone to investigate your Issue who knows/understands the engines and how to use diagnostic equipment such as VCDS to identify the cause of the issue.

Never thought about taking off atmospheric pressure :( makes more sense now! Noted.
