Loads of warning lights !!

Got into the car tonight (Seat Altea 57 plate) to an array of warning lights.

ABS, emission control, ESP and Electromechanical steering lights all on.

Drove the car for a short distance and the handbrake light came on with a warning sound. Fuel gauge kept going up and down as well beeping at me. The heated rear screen isn't working as well. Oh, and the speedo isn't working, Revcounter is. Everything else appears to be working ok.

It was fine this morning apart from the warning lights flashed as I went around a left hand bend, but they went off so fast didnt have time to see which ones they were.

We did have a problem about a two and a half years ago but it worked fine after about an hour or two when the AA came to look.

Anyone any ideas ? Could some water have got into somewhere to cause the problem although it wasn't raining this morning but the car was really wet.

Any help/ advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Richard

Bit of searching seems to suggest it could be a problem with the ABS, maybe one of the sensor near the wheels ?
Sounds like all of the lights that are on have something to do with the braking, apart from the emission control.
Off to the garage in the next couple of days. Hoping it corrects itself !!!!!

Someone said that I should disconnect the battery and reconnect to see if that clears the system, would that possibly work ?

Thanks

sounds weird but knackered batteries can sometimes cause this. i think on a lot of cars disconnecting the battery and leaving it got like 30secs or more resets everything (or so to speak)

Took it to the local garage, put it through the diagnostic and !! You guessed it, ABS module and pump problem. Tried all of the normal things, fuses battery etc The unit isn't responding so it cant check the eps etc hence the lights are all staying on

Someone is coming out to the garage to chase the wiring to make sure its not a wire problem. Then he is going to take the unit off and repair it if it isn't the wires.
Hopefully it will be a simple wire come loose, probably not though !!

Well, its not good. Local garage had chap in who traced the signal to the ABS unit, no signal from the ABS unit. Thus he couldn't get the code he need to recode it once he had repaired it. Therefore he couldn't do anything as without the code it wont work. Only thing they said is take it to the main dealer.

Booked into a dealership for tomorrow, expecting it to be expensive. They have said they will speak with SEAT re the repair, fingers crossed.

Oh, had the AA look at it as well just in case I needed to get it towed to the garage. They said it is safe to drive but only to the garage.

Seat dealer has confirmed that it is the ABS unit that needs replacing. Said that Seat don't do goodwill gestures !! Price to replace the unit and change the passenger window switch £760.

Was as thought, ABS unit. Ended up costing about £800 which I think was ok based on prices I had expected of £1200. Think they got their prices wrong when they quoted me. If the pump is still registering a signal then you can get it done by a local garage slightly cheaper as they can use a kit to replace some of the parts. Mine had to be a new one as it was completely dead. Common fault I believe.

Good luck with it.

Thanks for the info Rich, speaking to ECU testing about a poss rebuild. Have to talk the VW dealership where my car is in to removing it for posting off then refitting it afterwards, something they don't like to do.
Not many garages near here with the VAG software.

The tech at the VW garage wants to fit an exact replacement but mines from the 2004-08 which is the era with the internal pressure switch problem aswell, anyone know if the the replacement new ABS modules still have the same problem or have they been modified.

cheers Peter.

Crewe
Hi Peter,

I work at the SEAT main dealer in Crewe, Cheshire (Northwest UK) if this is a G201 Pressure sensor fault for the ABS control unit we will carry out this repair free of charge! it may cost you 200-300 to drive it over here at a bit of time but think of the money it could save you!!! :)

Hi Joe still trying to find out exactly what the problem is,I have a question you may be able to answer,a new ABS module if I need one,do they still have the problem with the internal switch or will the new part have been modified since 2005/6 so the switch is no longer a problem or are they the same ABS modules from 2005/6 with the same issues.

cheers Peter

Well, had brake warning light come on about 6 weeks ago, garage changed brake pads, car was fine for 2 or so weeks until the light came on again !! Took it back to my local garage who said that there was brake fluid leaking from he ABS. Took it to the main dealer who said that the abs unit had a fault (crack !!) so they replaced it free of charge.

Guess what, 7 days on brake light on and fluid leaking from the ABS again. The top of the abs unit where the pipes go in looks quite wet !!

Anyone any ideas if it could be the ABS again where the pipes connect or could it be fluid leaking from somewhere else and making its way to the abs ?

Taking it back to the main dealer again tomorrow, will be interesting to see what they say.

Cheers

Main dealer said it was the seal to one of the pipes where they connected to the abs, the o ring had a split in it. Hopefully all sorted now.
