Some one unsuccessfully tried to break into my car, damaging the drivers door lock barrel.:(
Its a 1.4 S so it has central locking but the key remote doesn't work.
Currently i have to open and lock the car from the passenger side.
The drivers door opens and locks fine...but when the key is inserted into the drivers door barrel, it turns with no affect...
I haven't got a clue how to go about fixing this...
Will an alarm/remote kit solve this problem?

Thanks

buy a keyless handle (from a mk4 Polo)and stick it on the passenger door and swap the working one to the drivers door. To get a new lock barrel and handle costs £100 as i have recently been finding out.

Even cheaper solution - on flea bay! Lock repair kit - its £14.99 plus postage...the item number is 200140213210 - hope that helps?

Has anyone seen those lock/handle Armalock reinforcing plate things for sale anywhere for a MK2? Been looking about but I cant see one anywhere?

I'v got the exact same problem right now but the lock had never been right.

Mine has central locking will i just buy a handle from the scrappy and put it straight on the drivers side?

how to guide.....

open door, on the side of the door level with the handle there's a rubber grommit....
remove gromit, and underneath there's a allen head bolt....
undo bolt, this then allows the hanlde to be removed...
to remove handle, place hand flat on it, and push handle towards front of car, and then lever the back of the handle out....

job done ;)

replacment is opposite.... :D

yeah the barrel comes out with the handle....

the lock is part of the handle, and then there's a metal 'key' type thing that is prone to breaking, that attaches to the lock barrel.

you can buy a replacement 'key' bit on Ebay for about £8.... or just go to your local scrappy, remove handle, remove 'key', and stick in pocket  ;)

Hi
Sounds like my mum has had a similar problem in my old 1.4. When putting the key into the drivers side lock barrel it turned with no resistance and then came out with the key. Which part do you think will be broken? What is the 'metal key' that is prone to breaking? Not going to get a chance to look at it for a few days, will the car still be secure?

cheaper to get remote central locking if it's £100 for new barrel and handle. I have de-locked handles on mine :)

£100 for new barrel and handle ? wtf ?

if you are half about mechanically minded its pi$$ easy to strip n rebuild theres only a later type now with different hook n paddle but as alternative is grab an old second hand handle and convert the barrel to match the key

used to do em over the counter while customer watched when i was at the dealers

try an older dealer they will know what you need and what to do
