I havent used them, but I got quoted £320 on Monday for a cat back at powerflow/top gear in St Albans, so the price seems about right

Seems a good price for a custom exhaust does that, spoke to simon who runs it he seems well clued up about it all, he said he would do me a deal for a sports cat and down pipe aswell if I get this exhaust!
It's looking good so far I'll be getting it done on the royal wedding day, I'm gutted I'm gunna miss it now lol..

not sure. went through it all with the guy at custom pipes but it was a year ago so details sketchy.
304 is best though if I recall. he changed supplier as people were coming back with problems, I wont say who they were. He's so confident about what he's doing he said I get a lifetime guarantee and to bring it back even if it started to sound different, great service and only a one man band, no advertising just word of mouth so lower price too.
I'm a bit OCD about things being level and strait as I'm a carpenter by trade. Told him exactly how I needed the pipe to sit and that it had to be centered. He had me take a good look and when we were both happy he welded it in place.
Good bloke.

He does sound good, I would have checked him out if I lived up that way. Was mainly asking to check that I wasn't getting bad materials at Powerflow

If you're getting a Turbo-Back exhaust made then specify that you would like the joins flanged and not sleeved. This might cost you a little extra but give you the freedom to change back to OE if you wish, a little easier.

Personally when I sell my car I think I'll return it to standard unless someone REALLY wants it based on my build thread or seeing it out and about as it is. I'll be removing the complete system from the turbo (3" all the way back) and selling it on as one unit, refitting the OE DP/Cat and then sourcing a second hand OE Cat-Back as my old one sadly rotted after 8yrs.

I'm only getting a cat back as of now but the bloke said he would do me a deal on a sports cat and DP if I go back which I think I will be, it's only 2.5 diameter tho is that ok on my car?

Jamjay is 3 inch ok to use straight through as he said 2.5 will be plenty because any bigger I'll expect issues with my car?

Sorry for all the questions but just want a good exhaust and I want it right.

You'll be fine then, when you go back for the DP & Cat then just make sure they'll flange it.

2.5" - 3" are all fine. I went for 3" because I am considering hybrid & big turbo, it saves on having to buy a cat-back system twice. What issues was he on about? I've had none with mine, it allows the turbo to spool up super quick and get the gasses out pronto. Milltek now use a 3" design which was tested on Stage 2 LCRs so it can't be all that bad.

The general rule on piping sizes that will compliment engine power are:

2.5" for 180bhp - 280bhp
2.75" for 220bhp - 320bhp
3" for 250bhp - 350bhp+

I've read of Evo guys with 400+bhp using 4" pipe but that just seems insane.

Basically it has already been proven that fitting a 3" DP & 3" De-cat/Race-cat to a K04 provides great results, extending the rest of the pipe to 3" will make little or no difference as the worst loss in back pressure has already been at the DP. This might be evident on a car that isn't mapped to suit the mods, hence Stage 2 code to accomodate for this and push the car further.

Edit: By the way, the myth that 3" IS loud isn't necessarily true, it's all in the design of the rear silencer that you choose and IF you want a mid silencer also. Mine is pretty loud but that's down to me choosing a small cylindrical silencer with no mid silencer. I like the sound although if I ever took my car to a track then I'd have a mid box or bigger rear box put in so that I'm safe with noise levels...just in case.

The Powerflow guy said that up to about 230bhp 2.25" is fine?

Sounds about right to be honest.

This is for turbo cars by the way, NA work differently and back pressure loss is a huge problem for their performance if the pipe is too big. A turbocharger creates its own back pressure as it's a restriction (exhaust turbine) in the exhaust flow where as an NA car is just pipe from manifold to tail pipe hence the need for bends and smaller piping to create back pressure and low down torque. An NA car with a 'too' free flowing exhaust will feel more guttless down low but higher powered up top, a turbocharged car will suffer the same effects to a degree but at a severely reduced amount, it's all about getting the exhaust gas out as fast as possible.

As a reference, on an NA Honda Civic VTi that I owned (160bhp) I went for a 2.25" de-cat system (1992 car, legal to have no Cat). The car lost quite a bit of torque low down and for town driving it was horrible yet on a proper blast it felt so free revving. I couldn't live with how it was as I hardly ever gave it any prolonged high rev driving so I put the OE Cat back in to recoup some restriction in the flow, this gave me a nice compromise. Bottom line was that I should have gone for 2" if I had wanted to run a decat, suitable up to around 180bhp where as something like a 1.8 Integra (190bhp) or 2.0 Type R Civic (200bhp) would have benefitted from a 2.25" system.

Thanks for all the information jamjay must apreciated mate it's made things alot clear now for me, I'm not wanting to go over 300 bhp, so the 2.5 will be fine then, once that's fitted it will be sports cat and DP then in for stage 2,

Thanks again Chuggy

No problem dude, glad to help. 2.5" will be totally fine for Stage 2, many people on here using that pipe size with great results. I'm just an exception who wanted to try something different :) and when you pull out a ruler, 0.5" isn't much different at all, well not in the case of exhausts anyway but I'll leave the other discussion up to the girls :D haha.
