Gearbox! but generally I would say they are solid cars. had mine for two years and there hasn't been a great deal that has gone wrong.

i would imagine if its his first car he'll be looking at an 8v of the 1.4 or 1.6 variety :p

Look out for spanish rust worm on the rear arches, sills and round the bottom of the rear window (water gathers there as the rubber perishes)

The dreded pedal box issue (have a little search on here) if the clutch is seriously stiff there might be problems.

And the Arosa and Lupo suffer the pedal box problem!

I think the mk3 has clutch pedal problems, but I believe it's a different design of pedal box.

I learn something new everyday, I didnt know the Arosa and Lupo had the same pedal box issue. I knew they mk3 had some sort of clutch pedal problem, but couldnt remember if it was the clutch pedal or the pedal box.

If you come here and are gratious and listen to what people are saying and dont ask stupid questions then you will always get replies quickly.

Hiya,

My Ibiza is my first car too!! Go for the 1.4 as it's cheaper with insurance and it still feels pretty powerful.

Here's some real good advice - don't let garages fob you off! I bought my Ibiza from a SEAT garage and they told me it only needed servicing blah blah blah but it turned out to be a load of bull.

Make sure you test drive the car because most problems with Ibiza's seem to do with clutches and gearboxes and this will become apparent when you drive. SEAT wouldn't let me test drive the car because they knew it would show up it's problems.

Mine has a VERY sharp clutch (my dad dreads driving it!) and problems with the gear linkage, both of which i've now got used to, but probably would have put my off if i knew in the first instance.

Don't get carried away by good looks like i did (shame!)

When you turn the engine on or while you are driving, make sure the battery light doesn't stay on.

Ask to look at the servicing history and see how many owners it's had. Look out for when the cambelt was last changed/inspected.

Go on mileage rather then the registration date. The service history should show a steady rise in the recorded mileage over time...

Hope that helps! Mine has had several problems recently, because the ecu in the Ibiza is stored under the windscreen (crazy place to put it), so the water collects around the computer and can cause the car to cut out due to damp connections. You might like to check this area out when you're looking at cars to make sure it's not full of water.

Apart from that i really like my car, it's short at the front so easier for parking and the handling is real fun!

Tell me about it. Got caught speeding a few days ago

harsh mate i got pulled because my rear suspension was to low the other day blamed it on the fattys sat in back lol but back on topic ive had my ibiza 1.4 nearly a year it never goes to the stealers as some people may remember last year when the garage in bury lancs quoted me near 2000 quid to have the problems sorted but thanks to my local mechanic it is now ready for mot next week having cost nearly 1500 less than seat also my car has done 98452miles on a n plate and is still pulling stong so my advice is this never go to the main stealer unless it cant be avoided and dont worry about mileage as much if the car has been well maintained it should run as good as a car with 20000 miles on and always drive it first or get the person selling the car to drive it for you if your only third party and insist on a service history a part history is better than no history good luck god speed and hope to see you at a meet sometime:D

I never go near the dealers either. I use a good, back street garage in my town. Never have any problems with them and them doing stuff for me is never too much hassle. Only time I go to the dealers is for parts.
