lumpy engine?

Hi all,

I knew it was only a matter of time before I was asking for help.

I bought my car about 4 weeks ago and it has been running great, however it started playing up yesterday.

At low revs the enging is very rough, car shakes up to about 3500 revs. thought something was wrong with the clutch. Unfortunatley it does the same when reving the engine when parked.

Thanks in advance for any sugestions.

spent all morning looking through the website and it would appear that a couple of you had this problem before.

Goose managed to fix it by changing the ignition module. so i'll give it a go and see what happens.

the problem is I bought my car from a garage that is a 31/2 hour drive away so not so easy just to nip in and get any problems fixed.

Any one else got another sugestion?

Cheers.

OK. not as simple as I first thought.

Fault now only appears to happen after the car has warmed up?

Doubt this is ignition module as I think the symptoms would be constant.

could MAF failure be causing the problems, symptoms are as follows;

1. loss of power
2. noisy engine note
3. feels 'lumpy' like not firing on all cylinders
4. possibly only happening when warm.

any help would be very much appreciated as I'm now finding my new car a bit depressing.

cheers

Yes, it could be MAF and people get different symptoms when it's on the way out. In the early days of my MAF failure I noticed it more just after I had filled a tank for some reason but general performance deteriorated very slowly so I hardly noticed it until I got it changed and realised just how much I was down on power by then! It did get more noticeable when warm with mine although on one or two occasions it had an erratic idle from cold. It did not throw up any diagnostic codes and it was only after it went back to SEAT again after I had already mentioned MAF that they changed it to eliminate anything else.

MAF is such a common failure it might be worth changing it to save you the long journey. If it isn't the MAF at least you'll have a spare for when it goes! Try not to get depressed - it is annoying, but it's a relatively cheap part and not indicative of anything more serious if it is just the MAF.

Hi Super V5

does sound like an ignition pack fault, might be worth checking out b4 you fork out for MAF,any garage should be able to plug in their dignostic,(does not have to be VAG -CoM),this will tell you if a pack has gone down,if you dont want to do this you can disconnect one at a time with the engine ticking over-if the engine goes worse when you disconnect one that one is usually ok.If the engine stays the same (lumpy) it is likely that is the faulty one-this is how the AA did it on mine and it worked a treat, took 2 mins to change at side of road about £25 iirc. If you are getting a petrol or unburnt fuel or bad egg smell when you try to drive this can also indicate ignition pack,if you do dont drive it as fuel is getting dumped into cat -not good!Sometimes -but not allways engine management light can flash or stay on as well

Hope this helps :)

gray t - thanks for the input, I tried disconnecting the MAF last night and the engine ran exactly the same. would this confirm if it is faulty or not?

ironside - that might be it - how do I go about disconecting the ignition pack?

thanks for the response.

It sounds like a intermittant fault, a crack in a wire or track somewhere that only breaks at a certain temperature. Best bet is as above, get it in and checked when warm that should get the fault spotted on diagnostics.

Hi V5

i didnt do it myself it was the AA guy but from what i could see he took off the engine topcover (over the sparkplugs) and disconnected each ign pack in turn-there are 5 on the V5 one for each sparkplug),it looked just like a push on connector and not a high voltage lead assume its some type of relay?,the AA guy even had one on his van and said it was a common fault on Seats, golfs etc and that quite often they would be tempremental when they got hot
I am sure there are many more experienced people on here than me i have only had the one go up to now-still 4 more to go! so try a seach for ign pack faliure most of these guys know how to change em in their sleep!
Hope this helps :)

quick update.

garage said it is a coil pack that has failed and quoted £200 to sort said he is 99% certain thats what is causing the problem but can't understand why it's not showing as engine light on dashboard.

Called Seat dealer to confirm cost of part as I thought only 170bhp V5 had coil packs and was given a price of £25+vat - so 150bhp must have em.

does this sound right for the type of fault showing?

any further help would be much obliged.

cheers.

OK. this gives me a bit of a problem.

could anyone tell what the name of the part is that the HT leads plug into on the side of the engine?

I've been told it's the coilpack?

Tried to ad an image but didn't happen, sorry.

website 'ignition car parts' call it the ignition coil - is this the same thing?

coil packs site on top of the spark plug. like little black square boxes. if you have leads coming off the plug then there going to the dizzy cap. hope that helps.

how did you check the leads. ive had cars before were the leads have looked ok. but have been shot. the only other thing to try is run the engine when its dark and see if any of the leads are arcing.

yeah tried at night, also swapped leads about to see if i could get a difference. only other thing i can think to change is he ignition Module.

I'll order one and give it a shot. if thats not it I have no idea how to pursue this
