Tried to remove a few scratches and chips from the Fiat Panel that I practiced on the other week.

Again, used Rubbish Boys 4" Orange Pad and Mark V Uno

Got a touch up pen from a local motor factors. Said it was the correct shade, but afterwards, I'm not 100% sure. Oh, and next tim I shall use a toothpick as the brush is just too wide/big.

Left to dry for a couple of hours whilst cleaning mine and mothers car, and then tidied the shed.

By the time it came to wet sanding, it was spitting with rain - not like that stopped me

after sanding (used 1500 or 2000 grit - I forgot)

For some reason, one of the scratches re-appeared. No idea why. If I've sanded the new paint level with the existing paint, then it shouldn't re-appear. I guess the paint may have required longer to dry

Pant finish! No where near like what I achieved 2 weeks ago! Started to rain at the end, so didn't have chance to try a more abbrasive polish!

Not a great job. But that's why it's called "practice" and used a scrap panel ;)

Will have another atempt later or tomorrow hopefully. Maybe try Mark V Qwik Cut or another sample I got off Ben (Rubbish Boys)

Looked better with the scratches!!!!

You could try a higher grade sand paper first then a more abrasvie cutting polish and see what it's like then, i've really got to get mine out nad practice on a panel or 2.

I read somewhere that superglue is just a bit softer than lacquer but polishes up really nicely - no idea how long that lasts though ... but if you're messing about it has to be worth a go :)

cheers lads....

think tomorrow I will practice on "general polishing" skills. Got a lad wanting his Mk1 Golf machined ready for "show season" as his Bug isn't finished yet, and may not be done in time for this year....

Can't wait to do the golf!

something hasn't gone right there Matt.

I think your using too abrasive sand paper. Trying using 2000 grit first, then 4000 then refine with a heavy polish then a light polish. Make sure you work the polish in real well.

Mat, I think UNO would really need a wool cutting pad to get 1500 grit scratches out, you may do it on the orange foam, but it will need several hits. Qwik Kut on an orange foam would probably be better, then go on to UNO to refine the finish. But as JonJay says get some finer papers and work up through the grits to 4000 before hitting with polish, that will work much better.

I would think that scratch re-appeared because the paint was sat on top of the scratch rather than in the scratch, so when you sanded you took the excess paint away as you wanted, but there was no paint in the scratch itself. Work the paint into the scratch with a cocktail stick or something with a fine tip.

How long did you leave the paint and lacquer to cure? If you try and do it too quick, it will be really soft and won't sand or polish properly.

got the panel out yesterday, made 2 fresh key marks. filled one with the brush supplied and one with a match sharpened down (had no toothpicks lol).... will leave it now until friday (next day off). Oh, and will look at getting some finer paper... and more polishes ;)
