DA is a good place to start.

With a lot of practise you can get really good levels of correction. Two years later and I still learning a lot although I believe its more product knowledge that actual technique for me. I have now moved onto rotary polisher which in itself can take many many years to master. People who do it for a living are still learning so really is the next step after you mastered DA.

In this detail I achieved an incredible level of correction even with a DA: http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=282922

That Anni, wow, great job with that! That's the levels of shine I want! It's beautiful!

Also been meaning to get a light/spotlight and tripod like that in the pictures, where can I get one? Would come useful for detailing and when spraying as the lighting in my garage is not great

i just used my classic meguiars polish with my dads cheap machine polisher but gave some good results and found it easy to use, think i may invest in one before the summer starts proper as its more how easy it makes polishing even when its not the best and gives good results(i think so anyway compared to by hand that is)

then may look at a kit similar to the DAS-6 later in the year or over the winter for next

Received the polisher the other day, looks like a good piece of kit! Waiting for a decent day to use it lol

Just wondering, I'll be needing some smaller pads for it. Which ones fit and are decent?

You will need to clay car before machine polishing otherwise you risk scratching the paint.

Spot pads are required for smaller areas were the 5-6 inch pad can't reach.

Got the polisher, and am loving it so far!
Was hard to get used to but have found a technique for using it and will go from there!

Some of the results I've been getting on my beemer:

(you can see a part of the paint where I've burnt through, shouldn't have started on such a large layer! and didn't take my time, certainly learnt my lesson lol)

Thanks for the help guys!

Looks like it's definitely made a difference - did you go for the full cut? I think I would be too scared to use anything bar the polish/finishing pads!
Generally dont really need cutting pads unless your working on very swirled cars and hard paint. BMW is definately hard paint.

I stick to polishing pads when detailing VAG paints and compounding pad when working on Mercedes or BMW paints.

I used the cutting pad and the most abrasive stuff I had, Meguiars 83. Only because as Jonjay said, the paint is quite hard and was really faded and marked. Then I went over it with a polishing pad and Meguiars 80.

looks great.

More practise you get the better the finishes. Maybe give her a wash again and do a third stage to ensure you burnish the finish more.

Cheers man. Been looking at your thread for tips during the polishing!

Yeah I will be, going to be stripping the car first so I can make sure every little bit is done. Was thinking of wet sanding some areas then hitting it with the polisher to get all the marks out. But don't want to jump into doing that just yet!
