I couldn't justify forking out another £90 for a HID full beam kit, but I do find my 6000k HID low beam kit is bright enough for me to hardly use my full beam anyway. I may well go for another HID for the full beam, I believe they are H3 bulbs, maybe wrong?

Danny.

hiya mate ye i have been told that was just wondering. ye i dont fink i could fork out another 90 quid on another kit but for your ref mate the main beams are h1 fittings :D

cheers shaun

I have HIDs fitted as standard equipment but would also like to change the outer main beam non HIDs for something that looks a bit less yellow. What make/type of bulbs have others used to get a HID 'look' on the outer bulbs and how did you get on with the ones that you chose?

Hiya mate i got this from another thread buit they said to use "osram nightbreakers" H7's there white 90% more light so they say, you will get them from ebay for a tenner i have ordered myself a set of them, was advised to get the osram silverstars but they are pretty crap eh i wouldnt advise them cos they are pretty yellow and looked crap with the hids.

hope that helps mate al let you kno how the osram nightbreakers are when i get them if you want ???

Cupranation,

If you have the factory Xenon headlamps, I always thought they had high and low beam in one bulb, i.e why they are called Bi-Xenon headlamps? Maybe wrong again?

Danny.

eh not to sure about that mate but it will be easy enough to check by looking at the bulb thats in your main beams, should just be a normal bulb not a hid one, hid bulbs are long an slim s ee if taht helps you

Danny, the factory fit HID has a high/low beam HID in the centre of the headlamp (where the dipped beam is on non HID cars) and a non HID on the outside that is used for the headlamp flash and what the manual calls "additional high beam bulb". Or at least that is how my car is set up.

Admittedly it is a curious set up, one xenon bulb that does high/low and one non xenon that does flash and also high. Every other car I have owned that has factory fit xenons either has one HID bulb for high/low or one for high and one for low.

So with the factory fit you get the nice xenon look on low beam but on high you get a mixture of the two (nice blue and horrible yellow) and the flash is done with the non xenon.

The xenon bulb doesn't like to be "flashed" i.e. switched on then off, as this kills the life span of the "bulb".
That's why they still use halogen bulbs for "flashing".

To be honest, I would just change the main beam bulbs to something like the Philips Xtreme or Osram Night Breakers. These will give a whiter light than standard halogen bulbs.

Jon, understood. Other manufacturers seem to manage it though? Both my previous cars (MINI Cooper S and Subaru Outback) had factory fit xenons where the flash was done by the HID bulb hence no requirement for a non HID as well for the flash.

Doesn't bother me, as you say I will change the H1s used for the flash to something 'whiter'. The opinion seems to be that the Night Breakers have a whiter light than the Xtremes? Anyone have any opinions on that?

ye alot of the bmw's have exonons on the flash but how they do that is when the dibeams are powered up so are the main's are covered up by a little flap.when you activate the main beam this flap opens an thats how it works, so ther is no need to be stopping an starting the ballasy pack, anyways cheers for all your help guys will purchase the nightbreakers an see you how i get on cheers

Ye i fink i might just go for them in the mains, heard good things about them, i never thought about them in the fogs tho mate, is ther any extra benifits havin them in the fogs ????

My mum's previous Mini Cooper S had Bi-Xenons and the only way to flash was with the Xenons, if the lights weren't turned on, it would power up the ballast and flick the cover to give a high beam flash, by the time you had flashed to thank someone for waiting at junction or whatever, you had gone haha :)

Danny.

Well they are 90% brighter, Fogs are a H3 lamp and cost me £15.90 the pair delivered

Bear in mind if you have a Facelift Leon the Fogs are HB4 not H3 as I purchased a set of the H3's and they don't fit.

Anybody want a set of H3 fogs

Really? Its says h3 in the manual. Good job I read this, was going to buy some tomorrow!

Yes I bought the H3's and when I went to change them found that the fogs contained the HB4's

I'll be buying a set of HB4's at some point just a shame that there doesn't seem much choice in this fitting and no Nightbreakers or Philips Xtreme
