I am sure this is going to be all over the web today

A new mileage-based tax for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars to be introduced from 2028

How are they going to get the figures I wonder.

I believe there’s going to be a system of self-declaration by drivers. Maybe a declaration of estimated annual mileage for the forthcoming 12 months - or actual mileage driven during the last 12 months (or both?) will be requested when you renew your annual VED?

Indeed.

Suppose they could enforce you to go an approved garage for the mileage to be read once a year during the first three years. If no reading obtained charge you a penalty like £5,000 linking the cars owner to their income tax. The penalty would then encourage you to get it read. I wouldn't trust peoples honestly. Ofcourse the penalty could be a fine. Get a penalty eVED if no reading submitted.

Suppose to be, being done in other countries so they have probably looked at that. They might in the longer term specify that connected cars should provide the data automatically. You'd think they could now... mind you Vag cars probably wouldn't . Feeder system errors and reboots. Youd be onto the penalty.

The good news is they have increased the threshold and are helping out on buying them. Those low price Vag cars they are planning may come in under the critical figure. Certainly Chinese ones will.

Ok this is what Which says

If you drive abroad or in ROI you are sunk under the current ideas. Evident the Tony Blair Institute haven't worked that one out. License to fiddle.

More on this and how they are going to do it. They expect to check each year upto MOT then they will do it.

Suspect its an accountants approach so if you dont declare your figures you will get done at the national average or national average plus.

That's the 240 mile figure the average driver does so the eVED will default to that or a similar figure if no data.
