Well I've bit the bullet and it's off to a VAG specialist garage. They did get it running but the crank case pressure is through the roof, it started eventually with the oil cap off but dies with it back on and it won't rev. They are going to compression test it and go from there.
Compression ok, they went to check the cat wasn't blocked as when it was running there was barely anything coming from the exhaust. Whilst checking that they've noticed the turbo is completely seized They're quoting £450 for the turbo, £200 labour and £40 for an oil and filter change. I'm tempted to either try and tackle it myself (but then it's getting the car from the garage back home) or try and pick up a turbo on ebay as there's a couple for £285 delivered. We're hoping to part ex the car in a couple of months so looking for as cheap a fix as possible to get us through until then.
