Obviously I'm aware a remap is better than a tuning box but it seems to boast some good power gains for a cheapish price :

1.2 TSI (105)
Standard: 105BHP 175NM
Tuned: 125BHP 225NM

1.4 TSI (150)
Standard: 150BHP 240NM
Tuned: 178BHP 292NM

1.4 TSI (180)
Standard: 180BHP 250NM
Tuned: 215BHP 300NM

There is also a selection of boxes for the diesel versions.

There are so many places now doing tuning boxes I do wonder if they will catch on more in the near future.

On the vauxhall forums they are very pro tuning boxes unlike here

just get a remap. tuning boxes only trick the ECU into making more power, and arent exactly renowned for quality. Good quality remap all the way.

Technically a remap also tricks the ECU into supplying more fuel, timing advance and boost too. In custom maps it is more controlled but generic maps are much the same as a box with regard to power and torque curves.

define to me what a generic and a custom map is then?

A good remap changes all the settings and the map within the ECU so its not ticking it, its actually changing the way it ramps boost thoughout the rev range.

A tuning box does not alter the ECU in anyway shape or form as the ECU map itself is untouched, all it does is trick it into working differently by making it think theres more load or changing the fueling.

I think IF aftermarket remaps are banned/fail MOTs in the future tuning boxes will be the way forward.

The Vauxhall boys rate them highly as said, I've been in a 1.9CDTI Astra with a tuning box and it could easily keep pace with a CTR

Tuning boxes will never compete with a properly set up remap.

We alter maps within the software so that ECU is requesting certain values. A tuning box uses signals which simply adjust resistances and in turn fool the ECU's parameters.

These boxes never achieve the results that a remap will, both in terms of performance and reliability.

If it was as easy as plugging a box in, I'd save alot of time custom tuning on the dyno with equipment worth a fortune :)

Don't get me wrong, I think remaps are a lot better than a box just wondered what other people thought about it. You do get what you pay for.

It is a very big if.

Due to the very expensive tools used, and the knowledge required to read the latest ECU's, I would be shocked if every MOT centre could invest.

To have the tools to read every ECU out there would cost 3, maybe 4 times the cost of your everday MOT centres set up, and even then the knowledge side of it isn't covered
