Just got the car back from the dealer's......minor service and mot done, no problem's apart from 2 advisories

1. rear tyre's starting to crack on wall's (which i can understand as there 4 year's old from the showroom.

2. Rear disc brakes are corroded (which for a 4 year old car I find quite strange) or this quite common?? has anyone else had the same from a simular age car??

on saying that they are abit corroded on outer edges, had nice quotation from them for the above work, 2 tyres, brake disc's (without pad's) £616......i've just nearly died.

isnt it normal for the outside of the disk to start rusting over time, it not like theres chunks coming off is it? Get a screwdriver and prod the rusty area to see if its solid. Cant say without seeing but i think they were trying to pull the wool over.

yea it's just the top edge's, doesnt effect the braking area of the pad's which have still got 50% wear on them

Rear brake disc corrosion is very common
Discs are around £25 each from places like eurocarparts - easy enough DIY job

I would NEVER buy tyres from a dealer.

In all my years of vw/seat ownership - I have ended up changing rear discs at around three years just to shut the MOT clowns up.

Cheap enough job if you DIY

they can wait til summer, bang on some new pad's and tyre's while im at it.... they'll do til then

I've never actually worn a set of rear pads out on any car. The corrosion gets to the disks first or they seize.

I think its because the rear brakes never really get used properly - they only do about 20% of the braking.

I've also noticed since the computerised MOT system was brought out garages feel they must give out some advisories even on a car thats passed with flying colours.

getting MOTs from a garage, particularly dealers will get you this sort of thing.
If they are going to get £600+ from someone for 2 tyres and a couple of rear disks then its no surprise they advise getting them done.

rear disks do corrode, not uncommon at all. sourced from GSF or the like, and fitted yourself much cheaper or failing that an independant garage who dont charge silly money.

also do some research re tyres, these can be got much cheaper than a dealer charges.

Ive used an MOT place that does the checks and no repairs for years, know them quite well now and the other day they were saying the advice now seems to be more towards advising and passing rather than older pass/fail.

I think VOSA? found that cars passed or failed but advisories were statistically rare, - likely due to lazyness and/or MOTs being seen as a 'lead' to more work by many garages.

my mates a mechanic and he owes a favour so disk's can easily be done. They've quoted £106 for a maxxis and £94 for a nexen (i think they've just gone like for like)

most of the quote is labour £220 for an hour and a half for the brakes £67 parts.

Not a chance I'm paying that, I aint daft.

if you get your car mot,d at your local council ran test centre, you will get a fair and square test done, as they do not do repairs, therefore do not gain any financial advantage from doing repairs that are not required.

pmsl at the labour charges

they are not even good tyres.

THIS.

whats your tyre size??( go get some Goodyear Eagle F1s like these)
personally have these on my boc.

is where i get most of my tyres from, then i just add a tenner a corner for fitting(make sure you have a friendly fitter)
kwick fit wanted 25quid a corner to fit rubber!

as for rear disks, i priced up all round disks and pads and it came to 176
