New CUPRA R officially confirmed

I'm no fan of the K1 styling, never really have been. But I was hoping for something a little more exciting for what is most likely the run out model for the Mk2 Leon.
The powerplant at first glance appears to be a modified TFSI variant rather than the newer engines finding there way into the Audi's and VW's. No doubt similar setup to that used in the Audi S3, so maybe you get the improved intercooler and a revised fuel pump.
I personally would like to see a DSG variant, but at this moment in time I see nothing that really excites me enough to be interested in an upgrade.
Im not so sure it should of carried the R branding either, it would of been better to add these upgrades and just be a Cupra.
Let's see what else Frankfurt reveals, but I'm not that moved by this.

Well no because the 'standard' car doesn't suffer from fuel cuts.

my wallet has breathed a sigh of relief aswell. was really hoping to see dsg, at least as an option. so much so in fact that ive already organised a boccanegra test drive, but doubt i will downsize though.
So SEAT have added a new high pressure fuel pump for the extra 25 bhp it makes?
does this mean at last they recognise the fact that the standard car suffers from fuel cuts?
im guessing theyre using the new chain driven type as oppose to the cam operated one.
doubt it as the picture of the engine shows the original TFSI rather than the new 'TSI' engine.
Can not agree more. Soooo disappointed. We're talking about the most powerful production car ever made by SEAT. Say goodbye to great exclusive looks (apart from the 19'' alloys). I wanted something like the touring car body kit as well. Oh dear , they don't know how to make a car look aggressive, sporty yet understated and classy at the same time. It can't be too easy, but they haven't even tried!
The RS doesn't look agressive, just like it's had a head on collision with Ripspeed.

It looks like an FR or Cupra! The only positive thing I can say is that at least it doesnt have that crap Aero kit so that it looks like any other Leon with it fitted.
What a let down. No bulges, wings, splitters, bigger brakes, fins etc.
I was going to be tempted by this if it looked decent and had decent equipment, but as it is, I would be smarter keeping what I have and enjoying it til I change marques, and this time it will be away from SEAT as there is nothing in the line up to want over what I have.
This is definitely not a car someone with a Cupra or FR will rush out and buy although someone coming in to the SEAT brand may opt for it if it is priced only marginally more than a Cupra.
As far as I can see, its a Cupra with a £300 fuel pump upgrade and different ECU map. The bigger (heavier) wheels dont cover brakes that are any bigger, therefore increasing rolling mass and slowing the car down.

You're right, Cupra R is a bit of a redundancy, but what the heck, it looked and sounded a bit more exclusive. THe conversation with your work colleaguye would sound like this:
- I got myself a Cupra R
- A what...?
- Yeah, don't play dumb, you know exactly what I'm talking about, you envious snob. I'll eat your bmwer anyday and live like a prince with the spare cash.

Aye as Dan says, just going off the image it looks to me that it's using the same TFSI powerplant ours are but with slight modifications.
Probably uprated S3 intercooler, possible injector upgrades though I was under the impression the injectors are the same on ours anyway. They may of uprated the pump internals though they never did on the S3 so not sure. But it's certainly not the newer engine finding it's way into recent Audi's and VW's.
The Audi TTS for example i think runs a newer TSI engine knocking out the same power levels.
Agree - remembering that the Cupra R won't be targeted at 17 yr olds who think cars need to be "aggressive"
