Hi Folks

I have just (10mins ago) bought my first SEAT, been a BMW man for years.

I have bought a 2002 V5 with history and 65K miles for 1200 quid (good deal)??

It has the usual wet front carpets that I need to try and fix ASAP. I did not get any manuals. How does the auto headlights and auto wipers work and............how does the radio satnav tv thing work???????????????????????

I will try and post pics tomorrow.

Hi to all

Congrats, you've done quite well there. I had to go for high mileage for my 51 plate, and still paid £1400.

The auto headlights are just a pain to be honest, they seem to switch up and down of their own accord. It's meant to be something to do with the brightness in front of you, but going past lamp posts seems to affect it. Fortunately it's not much of a switch, it's certainly not the same as the difference between dipped and main beam. It's also not controllable, it's all entirely automatic. You'll probably only notice it when you're stationary in the dark and someone drives past, they'll go ever so slightly dim.

The auto wipers are much better though. The right stalk is the wiper, down one for a manual single wipe, one click up for auto wipers, two for slow wipe and three for fast wipe. Set it to one click up and leave it there. The switch on the top of the stalk is the sensitivity, set this to sweep enough to get rid of the rain. I have it set to middle, it seems to be about right.

As for the satnav, the manual is about 100 pages long so its a bit much to put in a post!! It's fairly intuitive though, have a wonder round and if you have any specific questions, get them posted.

Very good deal I'd say -- got mine for 1800, and had to mend a few bits on it. Was about 72k, now about 10% more :)

There is a fairly good guide on how to get the water leak plugged in the Leon section. My own advice is to fork out the money for the VW tape that you can replace the failing foam seal with as in my experience the "cheap" dab of silicone helps for all of a couple of months and then fails spectacularly so :)

Yeah, mine was silicone'd so I have the additional fun job of shaving all that off to get a clean surface before I put the butyl stuff on! Although I did see somewhere a solvent that can get rid of it, might try that for an easy life.

dvance, someone else asked about the tape, and I remember someone mentioning foam seal. So is that what is there as it leaves the factovry, and the replacement part is the butyl tape?

Cheers for the friendly advice folks.

On a seperate note, I have been driving the V5 for a day now and what the F(((k is wrong with the Sat Nav. When i have the screen set to maps it is showing that I am about 10 miles from the actual location. I called up the GPS info and it states that there are 32 satelites but recieving from nil.

Can anyone advice whats wrong here??? Is there a master reconfig that I can do or is this something that others have fixed? Could it be the GPS reciever, it does track movement but just no where near i am??????

Cheers

I'm afraid I can't really help you with it, the damn thing is so far out of date it doesn't even have my village on it!! From what I could tell it was reasonably accurate when on the motorway, although don't forget it's nearly 10 years old now, and sat navs really leapt up a notch in the last few years.

You could always put it on vagcom, the satnav unit has it's own section for fault codes and can pick up all sorts of things. Mine registers the fact that it's not connected to the dashboard readout, although I have no idea how to fix that!

Mine seems to know well where I am just the maps are really old, and due to that the routing is less than ideal... Am still wondering whether I should get new maps for it ... Works quite well around town though... Just don't try crossing the Forth Road Bridge on it :D It thinks it's a toll road :D

Sounds like you got a good deal fella.

On a side note, what causes the damp carpets? I have noticed the driver carpet in mine gets slightly damp when the footmat is in place, but i removed the mat and it dried up??? I placed the mat back and it started getting damp again lol

Could be a few things -- water leaking through your pollen filter into the passenger side, leaks through some cable loom coming through the firewall on the driver's side (my guess), or it could be from the door seals. My guess is that when you put the footmat down the water can't evaporate (it must be a small leak) so you can see it/feel it. Might be worthwhile to check if your door seals are holding up. My advice is to do that with the door open, pour some water on the window (2-4L) and wait to see if it comes out between the trim and door, you might want to shake the door a bit to persuade it ;). Also worth noting if there's water collected on the sills after prolonged periods of rain.

Cheers. I have noticed wet door shuts / sills after a good wash.. I'll give the window/water test a go this weekend. As you say i'm confident its only a tiny bit of water ingress as it dried up after a day of no floormat being there...
