Me personally I would, iconic car and being old enough to have owned a 2.0 pinto engined Escort this brings back good memories of hooning around.
£84k, again I would, added to my “if I win the lotto” list.

No, I wouldn't - and certainly not at that price.

I fully understand the strong nostalgia pull, as Escorts were well-marketed top sellers and seen around everywhere when I was
a child in the 1970's. My Dad had a Mk.2 and his side of the family had another 5 Escorts, (spanning 1969-1979) between them,
(Mum's side being Vauxhall loyalists)

Despite the Escort's, (and Ford's wider) popular UK image and sales dominance back then, I also remember the cars as being
mostly mediocre compared to a lot of the competition. A large percentage of sales were heavily-discounted company car orders,
aided with implied promise of cheaper/easier servicing costs compared to rivals, regardless of the merits of the cars themselves.

Ford dealers often wooed private punters, (like my Dad) with cars that had smart styling/well considered detail and an easy driving
experience, (light steering and slick-shifting gears) - if little else of benefit. Then came the mutterings from the salesman about
'unreliable/rusty' BL/Chrysler/Vauxhalls and expensive parts for all the (sic) 'foreign muck', (Grandad's last Escort 2 was built in
Belgium, much to his annoyance when he later found-out.)

The real killer thing though was the 20% or so extra money they used to offer as trade-in compared to other brand dealers - but of
course they were getting that 20% back and more by asking top money for the Escort they were trying to sell.
Father finally woke-up when he got brave one day and dared to replace the Escort with a suspiciously well-equipped and good value
FIAT rust bucket - which turned-out to be overall a much better, more reliable car and it didn't rust any quicker than his Escort had...

My mate had a Super Mirifiori with a hand built alloy engine back in the 80s - went like stink for a car back then! Rwd and sounds like a mk2 Escort. Have a look on YouTube at some of them in classic rallies - awesome!

I remember being about ten and being in awe of my uncle’s first company car - a mk2 RS2000. White with a black vinyl roof and the fishnet headrests! What a car!

I had a Mk1 Escort up untill March last year. Sold it a week before lockdown.
Put all new suspension on it. 1600cc, twin 40s, exhaust, quickrack etc etc....
Had loads in my youth so bought another in my 40s. Couldn't get attached to it to be honest. But on the pluss side, the money has helped me feel more secure over the last (almost) year.

Those new MK2 shells as expensive as they are, are only really good for rallying. Panel gaps and metal thickness/quality.

So unless my grandads old gold 4 door 1300 mk2 was to re appear from distant history, i wouldn't have either.

I seem to have lost the love for classics, which was my passion.

Shame really.
 
Just to add. If i had 84k to blow on a classic Ford. Itd be a Mk twincam.

My cousin is a few years older than me and I used to go to autotests and rallies with him and a mate of his before I could drive, when they were members of Oxford Motor Club. My cousin used to rally a mini, but one of his friends had a Mk1 Escort with a 131 Abarth twin cam engine in it!

That thing sounded amazing and went like stink :)
