hi all,

Currently got a mk4 golf 1.6 16v and have finally decided to upgrade to an LCR after several years! (keeping it VAG)

would just like to know any advice in purchasing a 2003/2004 LCR e.g. Common Faults and problems.

(e.g. mk4 golf 1.8t had coil pack issues!)

thanks in advance

AJ

coil packs i dont think are an issue, they are just one of them things if they want to go, they wil go, kind of like bulbs, leaky door seals are an issue on some, but there is guides of how to fix the problems etc, do a search ;)

Coil packs, standard dump valve, door seals, water pump (plastic impeller) are the most common faults.

check the radiator fans work ok.
put the aircon on, and on temp LOW. the radiator fans should run at a slow speed. not full speed on/off.

check all electrics work, but thats just sensible for all cars.

mine come on full whack when i set my temp to low:confused: what does this mean?

when you say full whack, are they realy noisey?

its a fairly common fault for the fan resisiters to go so you loose the slower speed function. dealer will really bend you over to repair.

If the low speed is lost the fans usually come on at full speed and may pulse on and off?

no they arn't noisy! they just come on full speed, i can turn them down. it is fine at 18degrees but as soon as you go to "low" the fan speed rockets!

You are talking about the cabin blower fans, they come on full speed to achieve the temperature you have requested in the cabin, its normal!

He is talking about the two speed radiator cooling fans.

squeak coming from the rear when its wet I cant remember what this was put down to now but as said no major problems so just check for the usual, track work, re spray, if they have an uprated Dv make sure its a recirc one etc.

as Matt has said, you are talking about the cabin fans? - im talking about the radiator fans!

what you describe from the cabin fans is perfectly normal.
One tip if that if this annoys you, then put the fans onto demist. Deselect air con if you dont want it, and then the fans will be totally manual and wont increase/decrease when you change the temperature.
