This problem went away the next day. Seems similar problem has happened to others with no solution given other than replacing dials. Has been reported on MK4 Golf and Audi A3 around year 2004.

Checked fuses - all okay
Checked battery - good
ground at battery - good
ECU working but no error codes reported

Lights work, radio works, electric wing mirrors work.

Indicators don't work
windscreen wipers don't work

Battery disconnected for 1 hour, called break down service they didn't have a clue ;)

Have had previous cruise control intermittent fault in stalk.
Previous bottom out on rough road causing turbo to drop out (air leak?) has fixed it self no problem in past year for either of these problems.

Haven't checked all the earths yet, and can't unless the fault reappears

Mine just been in for very similar problem. Car starts and then just cuts out. Headlights work and but won't start. No battery light or brake light on dash. Turned out to be loose earth under battery and the 2x 430 relays replaced. Works fine now.

Ordered the ross tech vcds cable for £263. Nothin more came up other than I believe the battery is on the way out. Voltage had dropped below 11.7v once charged up car has been fine.

Where's these 2 x 430 relays? I'm having similar issues and searching the web seems to suggest this fault could be a common instrument cluster fault, but thought might try the relays first.

2x430 relay location

The relay panal is usually situated to the right of the steering wheel above the fuse box. A good pull at the bottom of the dash panal starting close to the fuse box or down the side of with the door open and the panal will pop off .dependent on which year your car is you should have acces to the relays. I had two relays changed as they regulate power to the engine management system which in turn then controls your dash lighting.each relay should be about £10 each.sometimes they short and if they are faulty then you don't want this to then make your management system fail. Hope this helps.
P.s they did update the relay box in later models so the numbers might change, but I bet they still have them in or around the same location but just numbered differently.

Thanks very much for the quick reply but mine aren't there, I can see some relays tocked away behind some extensive star screwed panel but none seem to read 430 on.
