This problem went away the next day. Seems similar problem has happened to others with no solution given other than replacing dials. Has been reported on MK4 Golf and Audi A3 around year 2004.
Checked fuses - all okay
Checked battery - good
ground at battery - good
ECU working but no error codes reported
Lights work, radio works, electric wing mirrors work.
Indicators don't work
windscreen wipers don't work
Battery disconnected for 1 hour, called break down service they didn't have a clue
Have had previous cruise control intermittent fault in stalk.
Previous bottom out on rough road causing turbo to drop out (air leak?) has fixed it self no problem in past year for either of these problems.
Haven't checked all the earths yet, and can't unless the fault reappears
