No spare wheel, a cost cut too far ?

Wife picks up her new Sportrider 1st March so was reading all the bumpf associated with the car. Find out that they no longer come with spare wheel, jack or brace.
Emailed the supplier who confirms with this:

"You are correct that there is no spare wheel nor jack or brace (it does have a puncture repair kit). Cost to supply a space saver spare wheel with jack and brace plus holder is £219. Would you like me to order these for you."

Is this a common practice on new car sales ?

YEP - it's one of the ways they reduce the weight of the car so the official fuel consumption figures are better.

Personally I will not run a car without a spare. Puncture sealant is stuff all use after a blowout kills the tyre.

the chances off getting more than 1 puncture during ownership of a car are fairly remote(i know i,m tempting fate !) so it makes sense to save a bit of weight

I've had 2 in as many weeks, sure glad I have a spare tyre.

I got a puncture last week while on the M1, that destroyed the sidewall of the tyre! Where would that have left me if I hadn't had a spare, I don't think recovery off a motorway would come cheep.

I think it is madness to not have a spare wheel and a jack in the car. As for only getting one puncture in the life of a car, I must be the unluckiest bloke alive. If memory serves me right I had about six in my last car!

Seems to be the same story with the Audi A1. Makes sense I guess, mine came with a spare but its never been used.

I'm getting the same car next week also. I asked for a spare wheel to come with the car for free - the dealer said yes.

Personally I will not run a car without a spare. Puncture sealant is stuff all use after a blowout kills the tyre.

Me neither, friend of mine had a puncture last year and the tyre sealant, thats a glue, glued the valve opening up before he could get any into the tyre. The very nice man had to come with a low loader, 48mins after he was called, which then damaged the alloy going onto the low loader. So one new wheel and tyre later, he now has a spare wheel/jack/brace in his boot. . .

My Focus ST2 with all its toys was 24K and came with a can of spray foam stuff no spare as there was no room for it.
