Straight cut gears can give the same noise, plus a whine.

To make this magic 'race effect' sound Mike wants I suggest draining at least half the gearbox oil out of the 'box - this will encourage the 'rally sound' whine

To emulate the Dog box sound I would imagine doing away with the normal clutch surface, and replace with some interlocking nuts bolted through the flywheel to really engage with the gearbox.

OR

when driving along make a eeeeeeeeeeeee noise that gets louder with engine speed, then when you move the gear lever shout 'clunk'

eeeeeeeeEEEEEEE-CLUNK-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEE-CLUNK-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEE-CLUNK-ee

this can actually be achieved by running your speaker wires past the alternator and loosening up the your gear linkage by filing bits off

......oh and you need to sneeze just as you change gear

Or surely it would just be easyer to buy an R5 gt-turbo  as they all sound like that (i mean with the clunking and "wooshy wooshy")
