I am going through a similar situation, the oil cooler testing seems to be a difficult one. I saw a youtube vid that showed a fool proof way of testing was to take it off, put it in water and attach compressed air to inlet and watch for bubbles coming out of the unit.

"After bypassing the oil cooler they took it for a short run and found some oil had been used"

doesnt that suggest that oil could have been coming out of the oil cooler?

I don't know how the oil cooler is connected to the engine but I suppose that depends on how it was by passed. Can the oil cooler be completely removed from the engine? In my eyes thats the only way to properly by pass it. The garage have been a little lacking on detail so I'm not sure exactly what they mean when they say "by passed" and "used some oil". Maybe I should interrogate them more thoroughly. I'm hoping I'll get the resuts of the head testing today so should know more soon.
 
Id just replace it tbh, its not expensive and that way can be ruled out/avoid future failure
 
For me it's too late to replace the oil cooler for diagnostic purposes but for Calculus it's certainly doable. Calculus certainly does seem to be in the same boat as me, floating down crap river without a paddle :)
