Hi all, my mk1 Leon 1.6 2004 has had the engine check light on since I bought it, thought I'd try to sort it.....suspected o2 sensor was replaced and codes cleared, sadly the engine light came back on almost immediately but with different codes??

If anyone can give me a clue what to do next? I would very much appreciate it!

Original codes
17604 P1196 O2 Sensor Heater Circ.,Bank1-Sensor1 Electrical Malfunction
17588 P1180 Linear 02 Sensor / Pump Current Short to B+
17589 P1181 Linear 02 Sensor / Reference Voltage Open Circuit

New sensor fitted

17524 P1116 O2 Sensor Heater Circ.,Bank1-Sensor1 Open
17591 P1183 Linear 02 Sensor / Reference Voltage Short to B+

Looks like the wiring between the ECU and the sensor has a break in it. The fact that the "Electrical Malfunction" code has disappeared suggests that the sensor may well have been faulty, to me at least anyway.
Can you check for continuity (or at least 12V/earth on the correct pins) between the ECU plug and the lambda sensor plug?

Here' a link to the company who make the VCDS software for these cars mate. http://www.ross-tech.com/ You can enter any of the 5digit fault codes into that site for a more detailed breakdown on the fault numbers, 17524 for instance http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17524/P1116/004374

As gaz said probably a broken wire there due to the heat, or quite possibly just the contacts on the connector are dirty where sensor plugs into the car.

Thanks for your help! The code link is great, bought a multimeter and planning a weekend tinker to hopefully fing the culprit...

No worries mate, you're welcome. That site is also the place if you need to buy VCDS/Vagcom at a later date.

Let us know how it goes on the weekend.

Good luck
