I have a suspicion you're going to say 'broken/cracked spring' so please don't. Ok, do if it is.

Every so often when i'm turning the wheel at close to or at full lock there's what i can only describe as a 'twang' like something is under load then releasing. The thing is it will then be fine for ages, days at a time, even on lock again and i won't hear it, then a few days later, 'twang' and again, fine for days. Any ideas? Seems worse with the wheel turned to the right but sometimes happens when turning left too.

Hi ya..
I had similar on my lcr and it turned out to be the front brake disc guard hitting against the lower joint assembly..my mechanic cut a bit away from the bottom...no more twang when full lock right or left.. Hope that helps.

I had my previous car lowered, and where the base plate of the shock had been bent, the spring wouldn't sit right and would occasionally do exactly this! The spring would spin and release causing the noise. I'd just check the spring/shock to see if you've bent anything whilst driving!

Thanks for the suggestion guys. I'll seem if my spanner can get it up on his ramp next week sometime.

You will prob find that if you jack car up it won't do the noise because there is no load on the spring

If so then I'm 90% sure it's the strut top bearing get someone to turn you steering while you look good look :)

Could it be possibly be the strut top bearing causing spring to jump round instead of just spinning

+1

This happened to mine, although when I got it jacked up the spring was broken too, pretty sure it was the strut bearing making the noise though as it was seized pretty solid.

Thing is when the strut bearing seizes up causing the spring to jump every time you turn it puts a lot of the wrong kind of force on the spring causing it to some times snap
