Did an oil change on the car today...

no probs i told her indoors .. only take an hour or so ....

yea right .....

got everything prepared.... drain can engine flush filter.. oil

were on the ball....

ran engine... added flush.....fast idle.... check

turned of engine... drain can under ... cracked sump nut.. check

removed sump plug... oil into drain can..... check

sh*t sh*t sh*t... oil not draining into drain can fast enough..... sh*t

frantically dig around in drain can to find out whats going on... sh*t

oil rapidly spreading on drive...............check

frantic mopping up of a nice puddle of oil..

luckily it stopped... and i withdrew the drain can....

feck the bloody plug had got jammed and reduced the opening to approx half of what it should be... no wonder it couldn go in...

as for the filter.... could i get the sodding thing off nope!!!.. why do they insist on putting filters in stupid places... (one thing the scooby got top marks for.. nice and easy)

back to halfords for a chain wrench... and you need three sodding hands to overcome the law of gravity.......

got it in the end... cleaned it all up and refitted filter.. oiled ring first check

refilled with oil.... hmmmm

why does the engine take 4.5 litres, but the oil only comes in 4 litre cans??

and yes a litre can is sodding expensive....

so total bill for today..

Oil £39.99
Filter £ 7.49
Strap wrench £ 4.59
Rags £ 0.00 (owe the neighbour a drink)
Stain on the drive priceless....

still i only have to do this once a year!!!!!

anyone know how to get oil stains out of a drive??

lol:D:D

Not too far away
DOH

I did virtually the same with the womans car! :D

I attacked the drive with a brush, fairy liquid ( 1 bottle ) and a pressure washer! :D

Took about 4 or 5 cycles of fairy liquid application, scrubbing with the brush and blasting away with the pressure washer but its all gone now!:D

hello.

So I aint the only one thats done that then.

Just about to change oil on my 97 toledo an hopefully will go alot smoother than when i did my cavalier.

I did almost the same as yourself on cav, got tools ready, didnt bother with engine flush as told it wasnt really neccesary(by a mechanic of all folk, lol).Got plastic oil catcher thing out and unplugged the hole. So under car I went, off with drain plug(by this time I got a little bit panicy an though wot if I get it everywhere, but continued on nonetheless), oil started pouring out an i thought it was going rather well till the level on top of the contaner got a bit high then started draining over the sides, by this point I realized I only had a little tiny piece of an old t-shirt as a rag, an lock-up floor got covered. I ended up doing same thing with washing up liquid and a wateringcan of hot water(after mopping up excess oil, obviously, lol) as lock-up is round the corner from my house so cant get pressure wash round to it.
But it wasnt till after I cleared the place up that I realized the little plug on the container, after accidently pulling the plug out, that there is 2 holes in my plastic can thing, 1 for filling an the other(well DUH!!) for letting the air escape as the oil pours in.

This time I'll remember to take the plug out completely before even attempting to take of the drain plug:redface::lol:
